Dealing with dog attacks - but how?

Granted, I've more lifetime experience of being a scratch-post to my kitty cats. However, one freezing morning back in January mid 1970s, a bunch of us were walking to schools just out of our buildings and into the streets. Which were knee-deep snow covered.

A guy with a Doberman, we'd never seen before, was walking from opposite direction. I kept my eyes on him, he looked suspicious.

Next thing we know, there's 4 more Dobermans running at us. They attacked our gloved hands. We were in Ski-doo outfits from head to toes, it was that cold.

These dogs ripped through the material of our gloves. Most of us ended up with bleeding hands and deep enough lacerations to require stitches. Only one girl had her middle finger bit off, which was reattached that same day in an emergency operation. Her finger survived due to temps being -35° that day.

None of us went to school that day. The police were called, the guy and the five dogs were apprehended. It never made headline news, but weird guy and 5 Dobermans were never seen again.

We moved out of that area one year later after a two years lease.
was this in Canada ?

How terrifying and utterly unacceptable. What did that man think he was doing?

Ok! Where I live all the new apartments love dogs and cats. They even have pet washing stations. In Canada, we are a dying country because the young generation is raising dogs and cats instead of little kids. I guess sex is too much of an effort. Better to stare at the smartphone all day and all night.
I suspect this will change once M3GAN becomes available. Get bored? Turning off the android is even easier than dumping a dog out in the country.

I've bought dog whistles, one each for us. It could at least disrupt a dogs attention and put it off.
I just feel I must be armed with something when out walking.

Considering I live in a Rural town, we are allowed to shoot them if they come onto the property.
Good idea and in the UK, shoot the owners as the kind of dog is only kept by the retards that the UK is breeding quicker than the dogs. The dog we are talking about here at the moment is the American-interbred thing that grows to 9 stone, interbred to be vicious and a potential threat and killer by nature.
On the forums, folk are posting a person could do this and do that, split its legs, spray it, choke it or hit it with half a brick, should any of the victims be strong enough or happen to be carrying such objects?
As a young child, I had half my face torn out by a small dog, missing my eye by a gnats whisker. Never made me frightened of dogs, but on some days the scars could still just be seen when I was 50 years of age.
My BIL was a Police Officer in charge of the Police dogs. Big guy and tough with it, having been in the boxing ring with some household names. One dark evening he was attacked by a huge guard dog while patrolling a building site and ended up splitting the dog's legs open. He left it there and did not report it, as he did not want the grief and paperwork.
Seems obvious that 99.9% of the public in the UK would not stand a chance in hell against a creature that has no place existing here, a Frankenstein monster bred for lifes knuckle draggers.

That's the kicker, we never found out. We never saw him or his devilish dogs. The worst of it all for our parents, no explanations, no compensations. However, we felt he was punished by law and the dogs destroyed.

To this day, I still won't go near one of them dogs. Nuh Huh!

So sorry that happened to you, I have seen the idiots in Sydney and Melbourne walking their dogs with chains on them and spiked collars, it breaks my heart, because I believe the Owner should be put down rather than their dog, whom they taught to be vicious.
