Dollar Tree carts with pole attached and senior citizens

Where we shop, the carts lock automatically if someone tries to move them off the
perimeter of the lot.
We have those too. They’re very expensive for the stores so I don’t think a Dollar-type store could afford them. They’re also more expensive when the perimeter has to be done retroactively.

Keeping the parking lots clear of grocery carts is not the stores only reason. Theft of carts. That‘s big money for the stores. The homeless feel free to take them. They use them for their home base but also will push extras back there and then abandon them. We see it all the time. One city was considering a bylaw to fine the stores when carts left their properties.

@perplexed do you use a rollator? You could use it to get into the store, set a basket on the seat, and take it back to your car. I’ve seen people with large piles on them.
No I have a cane my husband has a rollator in trunk kinda heavy for me to get it out alone. Good idea though but my balance is not good on uneven parking lots either. Not being difficult just stating facts. We can shop on our own but our walking alone is no more.Thank you!

This is an example of the trolley Corrals dotted all around the Car park....there's one every few feet...

I've never used one. Where do you get the coin back at?

@perplexed I do agree with you. Goodwill has those poles on the carts but even they will call for someone to help with carryout if it's needed. I'm sure the Dollar, Twenty-five Cent Store doesn't. We have homeless and they do take the carts. If people have the funds, I wonder if they can buy their own little cart or trolly. If they can manage one. There are a number of different kinds.

I understand the concept but elderly and disabled still would have problems getting in the store and taking it back if they needed a cart to hold on too understand???
If you have a walker or cane and can't park close enough to a return stall can you set the walker or cane on top of the cart and push it to where it needs to go and then pull your equipment off to get back to the car?

Thank you and video too great to see, here in the states people would be breaking into them stealing the money. The few stores I know of in the states that do make you pay a quarter for a buggy makes you come in and pay for one and bring your buggy back in to get your quarter too.
I'm not sure if you can generalize by saying "here in the states people would be breaking into them stealing the money." I have not seen that happen at the ALDI's stores I have frequented. I have, however, seen young men going around the parking lot once in awhile asking if we need our carts returned (so they can get the quarter). I also know that the wheels on the carts have something attached to them, so if you pass a certain boundary, the cart does not move forward. So that minimizes the stealing of carts.

I don't know if I said already... but all of our Supermarkets have the coin trolley situation in place and have had for probably more than 20 years ..not just Aldi or Lidl ( the 2 discount supermarket chains)..in fact Aldi were last to do it here...

It's £1 to use a trolley... which is more than a US dollar... but the slots are very secure, and if someone chooses not to return their trolley to the corral, then whoever returns it will get the £1...

However also here , we can use a £1 shaped token instead which we initially buy for £1, and keep it on our keyrings, so we always can use a trolley even if we don't carry cash..

Here's the image..£1 on the bottom of the picture..token on the top...

The tokens are the same shape and weight as the £1 coin.. so accepted in all trolleys..

Are you expected to use a soaking wet trolley if it's rained ?
Yep! It's happened to me often. The attendant pushes the row of carts into the store. They are all wet and shiny, and that's what we use. Many a time I've had to wipe one down (or avoid going shopping whenever it rains!). Now I don't know if other stores have covers (in other cities or states), but I have not seen these in my area.

Same way here too after it rains. You either use them wet, wipe them off with whatever you can or wait and catch a person coming out of store with a dry one and grab it after they are done. I know pathetic right? Those covers are really nice. I am glad y'all have them.

Just guessing, the stores are protecting the carts with a rental slot; they’re expensive for them to buy. All ours have them too. I can’t remember not have having the rental slot in most grocery stores.

All attempts to use those coin operated carts in NYC have met with dismal failure. Doesn't work here, the people soundly reject it.
Why? I think it’s brilliant. It makes people more accountable for taking their cart back where they should instead of wherever someone feels like leaving it

If they don’t take it back, they don’t get their quarter and someone else will take it to use and get the quarter.

Every now and again shopping cart guys come by and gather lines of carts to put them back into the store where you normally get them.

It’s worked here for years and I’ve yet to see any nastiness or hostility. I think it’s a brilliant system. We’ve got electric charts for disabled people also.

One of our stores here(we have 2) the one close to our home has shopping carts with poles attached so you can't take them out the door to your car, what are the elderly and disabled supposed to do if they can't carry their bags and have walking issues.I have tried emailing and calling corporate to no avail. It is simply profit over people. They are trying to save money by not paying a person to get the carts in their lots but they are keeping us out thus losing profits so what have they gained? I see people struggling to get in their stores and struggling to carry their bags back out using canes etc. We cannot go there and won't go there but it is not right in my opinion.

They also need to change the name of their store it is no longer the Dollar Tree it is 1.25¢ store
our Dollarama has carts like that too. We don't go in the Dollar Tree that much. Then there is a store in the mall calls itself a dollar store, fortunately we can take regular store carts in but very little is actually a dollar.

When you return the shopping cart to the corral in the parking lot, you insert the little chain thingy in the handle of the cart ahead of yours in the line up, and your quarter pops back out, and you take it. No human attendant needed at the start or the end of your use of the cart. JimB.

I posted a Video above.... :)

When I bought my condo I bought a small, lightweight collapsible cart from Walmart to bring my groceries in because I live on the third floor and only wanted to make one trip. I keep it in my car.

You could get one and use it to shop in the store plus have support walking to and from your car. It’s tall enough to be a comfortable height and I paid 25 for it.
