Singer/actress Cher had her adult son kidnapped, taken to rehab

Singer/actress Cher had her adult son kidnapped to help get him into rehab. He was staying in a hotel trying to save his marriage to his estranged wife. She hired 4 guys to get her 47 year old son out of the hotel where he was frequently in public in poor shape. This almost a year ago but court documents coming out now.

Cher hired men to kidnap troubled son Elijah Blue Allman from NY hotel as he tried to save marriage

On one hand I get her sticking with her son even at 80 with her son being in his 40s. At a certain point an adult child should be allowed to deal with their fate good or bad on their own-. Until the addict wants to sober up or change they won't. Since he has a lifetime of drug issues she should've learned that by now.

Your always a Mom.Especially in a case of life and death.
I do agree that an addict is the only one that can save their own life.

I don't blame her for using her money to try to save him. She may have thought he was close to overdosing or suicide. I hope he's better now.

Sometimes an addict or a mentally ill person is too far gone to use their own mind to straighten themselves out. Only by getting themself clear of drugs or properly medicated do they have enough mental strength to stay sober.

Doesn’t it seem that the sons and daughters of celebrities and national politicians have a higher incidence of substance abuse and mental health problems than the general population? Perhaps it’s the curse of having a famous parent whose act they can’t hope to follow. It’s hard living in the shadow of a legend…

Cher’s been at some low ebbs in life herself, and I applaud her work and spirit. Perhaps she needs to sing her song Believe to her son…

It's a general consensus in recovery that people won't recover unless they want to. So I wonder if kidnapping will help much. Is this actual kidnapping or is it intervention? Not that intervention in this case is any better than kidnapping. We don't hear about intervention much anymore. That was popular at the end of the last century. I suspect it didn't prove to be that successful.

Addicts have to want to help themselves. All the wishing & trying in the world on behalf of the family will not do it alone.

My ER doc friend has it all over the years with overdoses. Two common occurrences that he would see with addicts:
~ Person comes in on an OD & is treated. They are released only come in again before his shift is over for another overdose.
~ Person has overdosed & is resuscitated. Upon coming-to, he cusses everyone one out for ruining the best high he has ever had.

My husband & I have been to two viewings for kids of two different couples we know. One died from a heroin overdose along with her (18 yo) boyfriend. The second was a suicide after he (21 yo) used bath salts (had previous drug use history). These families did what they could, but sadly in the end they were powerless.

It's a sad fact , the only person, who can stop an addiction is the addict, himself. These forcefull attempts, like kidnapping, etc., do produce a halt in the addiction. But in the vast majority of times, when the addicted get back on their own, they relapse quickly. To kick an addiction, the addict, himself, has to wholeheartedly want it.

This. Addicts are some of the most selfish people in the world rich or poor. It is literally about their gratification or high. That it is their chosen life or life as they know it.

All the addict has to do is want to change. They don't have to know how or have the will power but thats what rehab, groups and organizations like AA are for. But they have to want to change and accept or ask for help.

One of the issues with drugs and drug addicts today is that many are a mix including dangerous substances like fentanyl. Their choices and drugs expose others to more than bad behavior or crappy character they are physical danger to others.

An addict must be selfish when it comes to quitting. They must only think about themselves and literally SAVE THEIR OWN LIFE.
The selfish ones quit and then become selfless.

Makes sense in that many hit a stage where they don't care at all ie the types ones see slumped over in public. So yes selfishness and/or FOCUS on changing/themselves makes sense. But they have to want it and pursue it.

And sobriety is as much as about change and not just drug free. Many were of poor character etc before drugs took priority in their life so again they have to want to change.

Not really IMO. They just get more publicity.

Re OP: If Chaz doesn't make efforts to follow the program and get clean on his own, no amount of money and power will help. However, I get why Cher gave it a try, albeit an extreme one.

:) Given time, without the influence of drugs, Chaz might get his head on straight. It's not impossible, worth a try, poor thing..

My guess Cher probably 'just' paid or sent her child to rehab several times over the decades. But again until the addict wants to sober up and change their way of life things won't change.

This is why letting an addict hit a bottom is so important. They must experience the full consequences of their actions. Intentions may be good but can't keep on running to the rescue not just with rehab but anykind of support or money, no matter how small it is the addict must hit a bottom so hopefully they start thinking 'this sucks it's time to sober up or change'

By constantly sending Blue to rehab at least may be buying him time, and mom's got the money. Besides, what else does he have to do?
I see what you saying but rehab to many addicts is nothing but a timeout which is not used to reflect, contemplate etc. In the back of their minds they know mom will be there to catch them if they mess up. It might not even be planned or intentional thinking.

But until they are forced or allowed to get to a point where they are so miserable it motivates change, change will not happen.

This article refers to her other son. Chaz is Sonny Bono's child. Elijah Blue is Greg Allman's.

According to the article, this "kidnapping" occurred nearly a year ago. November 2022.

For those outside the US, the source of this article, The New York Post, was once a well-respected newspaper, but is now owned by Newscorp AKA Rupert Murdoch, who, as is his habit, turned into a sensationalist rag.
