My DS is babying 3yo GD , what to do?

Hello,

One mainly for us grans and gramps here

I'll start this by saying my DS and DiL are both amazing parents and are very loving. My GD is flourishing for her age and is a very polite little girl.

The problem I have and don't know how to/if I should raise is they're almost too protective and give her all she wants. She turned 3 in June and still isn't potty trained (not helped that in the 3yo check up the Dr said it wasn't a problem until 4) They also give her a pacifier whenever she wants and she looks far too old to have one.

Has anyone else had this happen with they're GCs? Did you try and initiate potty training or should I take a step back and let them do it and worry less? Back when I did it all mine were trained by 2.5 at the latest, what's changed!!!

I saw a boy of 6 the other day running around the park with a dummy in his mouth...looked very odd indeed, but in today's world with so many children suffering from conditions.. ADHD.. etc.. one cannot judge...as an outsider....different of course to your situation dealing with a family member ...

It's been my experience that kids give up the pacifier by themselves when they're ready. It's a "self-soothing" habit they abandon when they find other ways of coping with stress.
And they don't start 'real' school wearing diapers. MYOB grandma.

Kindergarten teachers are realizing that most of their students were never potty trained.

Many teachers are asking themselves, why now?

Up until recently, kindergarten students were fully potty-trained and had been for years, with the exception of the occasional accident. After consulting with parents, teachers were surprised to learn the reasons their children were not potty trained, and why they had no intention of teaching them before they started school.

Teacher Explains Why More Kindergarteners Than Ever Are Starting School Still In Diapers

It seems it's quite rife...many children are going to school also not knowing how to hold a fork

Nine per cent – almost one in ten – of heads and senior staff said that in the past year a child aged between five and seven had worn a nappy to their school. If representative of schools across England, it would mean up to 1,600 of England’s 16,000 primary schools had at least one pupil aged over five still wearing nappies in the past year.

Anne-Marie Middleton runs a programme at a Kent school to help pupils go to the bathroom on their own. She says many pupils are too embarrassed to admit they still wear nappies.

She said: ‘We’re seeing more and more children wearing nappies.

‘We find that more and more children have an issue with toilet training further up the school. I know of one 11-year-old who has to wear pull-ups at night. It can really place a strain on teachers. It stops lessons.’
As well as being unable to go to the bathroom without help, they have no idea of table manners or even how to hold a paintbrush.

Janet Marsh, a teacher from Dover, said she knew of some 15-year olds without medical problems who still had toilet training problems. ‘It’s an incredibly serious situation,’ she said.

‘There are children who miss 25 per cent of their education in reception because they’re being taken out to be changed. How are they going to catch up?’

My grand daughters daycare insisted that all kids three and above be potty trained.
the thing is..school demand that children ( those with special needs aside).. have their children out of nappies.. before they start school... but what can they do when quite a significant percentage are ignoring this. They can't refuse to teach the child... so they become not only teachers, and in loco parentis ...they're also expected to be nannies as well.. this is all wrong.

Remember also in this day and age where Paedophilia is at a very high rate.. why would a parent care so little about their child, that they are willing to allow a stranger.. and this could be a male.. to toilet their small children.

It beggars belief, but not entirely surprising.. when I see many , many times in recent years how children (toddlers)being pushed in prams are entirely ignored by the parents(s)..while they chat or text on their phones.. and the child is often give an Ipad to stare at cartoons... if they can't even talk to the child while outside for a few minutes, you can imagine that they are happy to sit the child in front of the TV or an Ipad at home.. and be too idle to even learnt to potty train.. or show the child how to use a fork..

I was amazed one time when eating at Korean buffet that a Korean or Chinese couple had a two year old sitting in a high chair and was quite nimbly using a plastic fork to eat. I thought these parents must be very mindful and attentive of what they teach their child.

ye..and my daughter did the same when she was 2 years old... but this generation are a different kettle of fish...among so many the Mobile phone and it's contents are King and become more important than anything ..which is another reason we hear so much of the epidemic of Constipated children.. because these same parents are feeding them ''easy foods''.. oven baked chicken nuggets and fries et al, or cheap take-away foods....... foods full of chemicals.. because they can't be bothered to cook or even learn to cook..

Probably one of the worst things ever for childrens' health in recent times has been the ability for parents to sit on a sofa and order a take-away delivery to their home.. ..no cooking...just unwrap a burger and fries..

Holly, you made so many important points here. And there's very little you can do to fix people today.

I live near a train station. There's a pedestrian crossing of the tracks that requires people to look before they cross to the other side. It's been that way probably since the 1950s. But now because of cell phone distracted pedestrians, they're having to build a massive building structure that includes a ramp up to an overhead crossing then over to a ramp leading down to the other side.

I absolutely believe it.. because like you we have a train station not far.. it's a very busy road.. not a rural road, so when the barriers come down to get pedestrians and motorists to stop and wait for the train to pass.. guess what? ..they just scoot under the barriers.. you can't fix stupid...

Incidentally, welcome to the forum "
Thank you! I was having a bit of a moan and a friend mentioned this. They've not given me their forum name yet! I've never been beyond Facebook but couldn't post in groups there and much prefer the specialist forum idea. I've spent too much of the morning browsing funny threads

I'm sure they'll recognise you before too long, ... but yep be careful this is a very addictive place to be.. :D

Thanks, this might be me being old and I need to move on with the world, but I find it a little embarrassing taking a 3 year old with a paci in the car. She doesn't need it but wants it

A grandparent's job description is to baby sit and spoil the kid. Nowhere in the fine print does it say interfere with your son's & DIL's parenting. There are few more unwanted things than that.
Yep definitely I'm never going to step over them, they're raising a wonderful little girl, I want to help and nudge, if I can't I'll still support them unconditionally
