Gardening in 2023

We'll make pesto & put it in the freezer. We found out when we froze it, the garlic looses it's flavor, so we leave it out until we defrost it & add it in fresh along with some salt to taste & more parm. I still have a few jars from last year, so I won't be completely out.

Gardening in 2023 has truly been a challenge because of our extended hot summer in Dallas. We had our flowers potted in May and especially the Hibiscus had a tough time because of all the record temps. The leaves actually burned in the sun. We are down to the low 90's today (which is still 10 degrees above the normal) and they have finally started to flourish and bloom. Our Azaleas have just started to bloom as well. We would usually have our landscaper planting our fall flowers at this time of year, but we won't be near usual fall temps for some time.

Same here with hot weather...very challenging and not too many pictures.

A week or two ago, Dio took this pix of The Fairy Garden......

I love the way he got the whole thing in the pix, and the way the sun is playing on the plants.

Now, there are a lot more flowers blooming. Here are just a few of them.....

Image

Dad's mums
My Dad used to have hundreds of mums that were this color. Now this one plant is all that has survived. It is just to the right of the coffee cup tree.

Purple Hearts

Spider Lilies
Ok, I'm cheating...these flowers did not bloom this year, so I used an older pix. When they do bloom, they are right next to Dad's mums. I love the way those two colors look together!

Image

Yellow mum
Other mums are blooming, too, including pink, white, purple, and red. The pix didn't work well, so I deleted them.

???
These came up from a package of mixed seeds. I have been told that they are probably cosmos.

Image

Coleus & Dianthus
Both of these almost died this year. Right now they are flurishing and gorgeous.....the pix doesn't do them justice! They are just to the left of the coffee cup tree.

...look what we did last week!

That's right, the coffee cup tree is gone!!!

Dio cut it down, and then made 5 foot lengths out of it. From there we moved the pieces to the back of the Fairy Garden. There were only two casualties during this process. Half of Dad's mum got clobbered, along with part of the coleus. Could have been much worse. And I can't believe how nice the Fairy Garden looks now!

We are still working on it, but it looks better all the time! The coffee cups need to go back up, etc.

This week, more cosmos are blooming, in colors that I hadn't seen before, along with some huge zinnias!

Here are two more views.....

Here in the Northeast corner of the USA, the daffodils aren't anywhere near to blooming, but their green tips are visibly up out of the ground, earlier than usual, by far.

Crocuses (white pointy tips) and tulips (reddish-green tips)
are also up out of the ground, and looking strong and promising. They usually wouldn't have broken ground yet, or even when they did, they would have remained hidden.....been covered by snow or ice, and out-of-sight.
