How Would You React If We Found Sentient Life on Another Planet?

This came up, as a sidebar, on another thread. There seems to be the idea that the authorities are keeping secrets because..... reasons. But for me, it would be the most fantastic thing ever. To know there was intelligent life elsewhere would be a monumental experience. Just wonderful.

So the question is - how would you feel about it? Would it change anything for you?

Me? I'd throw a party and save the sour milk!

I always figured that the ones close enough to be visiting us descended from those who left the planet a couple of global cataclysms ago when civilization fell. Coming here to make documentaries to show back home, attempt a little missionary work, or turn a profit by harvesting organs and bone marrow. Or maybe they just can't duplicate our process for making fried chicken.

We descended from the ones who didn't leave. Some Flat Earthers, some religious nuts, some too poor to buy a ticket, and some just too darned stubborn to go.

I can't think of anything it would change for me... if they were friendly. Or... well I guess you meant just proof of life without them actually coming here? 🪐 Okay, so let me re-think my answer. If it was proven they're out there living somewhere, I think it would be "oh wow" and then not much more than the initial reaction. Just following new developments because I love learning.

If they'd visit the good ol' earth, it would change things because we'd have to find out how to live peacefully with them (not a real good record earthings have in that area!) 🌏

Indeed. We've all seen War of the Worlds. :D

Still, for me it would be life affirming. It would help cement us in place within the vast cosmos.

I think the biggest secret is that there's nothing. But, keeping the speculation alive is a great way to provide a smokescreen for the super-secret military projects that resemble what the public would believe to be extra-terrestrial.

That's a real possibility. A sad one. But one must accept the data, and honestly, there is no reason - yet - to believe life on other planets exists. I think it must be out there (as previously stated) but I can't subscribe to blind faith. So I'm just hanging here, hoping that it's discovered within my life time. Which is hugely unlikely.

I genuinely think I would react this way, by saying to myself. Wow, I wonder which god created that life an another planet, and is it the same god as the one people believe on earth? Then I would think, if it is the same god, then what the hell is he or she or it playing at, and why isn't it mentioned in the bible or some other holy book?

Then I would think to myself, but I don't believe in any god, so why does that train of thought matter? I would then probably wander off for a few hours in some corner of my mind and think it through more deeply. Then after dragging myself out from that corner of my mind, I might say something to myself like, "Wow, this is great." Do some think I'm kidding? Then think again.

I would then wonder:

I wonder if they have social media, and if they do or did, how did that turn out for them? Did it become so destructive that in the end they banned it, and how did the turn out for them?

Do we have sighting all over the world. Sure, the National Enquirer has some sightings here. What about in other countries.

Perhaps if they arrived, they’d disrupt all the turmoil on earth. I’m not expecting it.
