How Would You React If We Found Sentient Life on Another Planet?

This came up, as a sidebar, on another thread. There seems to be the idea that the authorities are keeping secrets because..... reasons. But for me, it would be the most fantastic thing ever. To know there was intelligent life elsewhere would be a monumental experience. Just wonderful.

So the question is - how would you feel about it? Would it change anything for you?

Me? I'd throw a party and save the sour milk!
Considering there is a belief there is life after death so somewhere outside the solar system we know there must be sentient life.

How Would You React If We Found Sentient Life on Another Planet?

Wouldn't be a surprise

According to scientists’ best estimates, at least 100 billion galaxies populate the known universe, each with as many as 200 billion stars.
Given those numbers, it is at least reasonable to conclude that some of those stars have planets that host intelligent beings.

So the question is - how would you feel about it?
I'm good with it

Would it change anything for you?
I don't see anything changing

I'd give my life to take a few steps on another planet. Like, what if we could get a man to Mars, but there was no chance of getting him back? Would you go? Me? Yes, I would. I've felt that way for some time, but at this age it's even more true. Hell, put me a capsule and launch me into deep space, aimed at some distant possibility. I'll be dead by the time I got there, but what a way to connect.

Ha. Bring it on. I’ll leave earth in a heartbeat.

How would it change for me?
I’d gladly welcome change.
The only thing that doesn’t change, is change itself.

I used to teach a similar mantra - in the business I was in, I'd say: Change is the only constant.

I'd also say: Most problems occur at the point of change.

When things are constantly changing, it's hectic and crazy. The pressure is on.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS.

I was once offered a job with a nice pay raise in the City of London. It was working with a team that monitored transactional change in the finance industry. In my final discussion with them, I learned the nitty gritty details, and turned it down. Time there was measured, and had to maintained (or improved) in slices of a thousandth of a second. Anything less than that was catastrophic.

I knew how to do the job, and as I say, the money was great. But I decided that I just didn't want to work in an environment that highly pressurized. Where you could be hauled over the coals if you were 100th of a second out because of some issue in the system. I knew my limits, and that was too much.

Sadly, I will not be alive in 2063 when the Vulcans make First Contact with us. But I would be thrilled beyond measure were we to find sentient life on another planet within my lifetime. Hopefully we’ll at least get to Mars by then…

How Would You React If We Found Sentient Life on Another Planet? Good Question: Hasn't happened yet, cannot predict the future.

Actually, not really surprised about life on another planet. After all, if life developed here, the same conditions would have created life there. We may be able to detect them, but I doubt we'd understand them. They are not human, it's like a cat trying to communicate with a squid.
I just picture the effect of the discovery, on people. Some would claim it was a government hoax. Some, would start praying to our new space friends. Humans may be sentient, but that doesn't mean emotionally sane.

Oh, 100% there would be conspiracies about them. They're fake, they've been here all along and are only just coming out now. They've signed a pact with the elites to take our minds off the latest scandal. They've only come to take our guns from us. :D Hell, they're here for our women!!!

Well, after showing up with a gift basket, it would seem rather prudent to conquer the language barrier (Assuming they aren't telepathic), and once achieved, I think we would be doing them a great favor by sharing the cautionary tale of earth (Assuming they are virgins to the calamities we so often inflict on ourselves). Our past history reveals that when early explorers encountered new civilizations, we have always felt the need to change them into us, and we all know how that's worked out (cough, cough, Hawaii, Native Americans, Aztecs).

It would be extremely interesting to learn of their morals, values, philosophies, strengths and weaknesses, and not contaminate them with ours. It would certainly be an interesting study that would surely eclipse anything science has had the privilege of examining on earth. What they consume, how do they reproduce, what interests or entertains them, modes of transportation, and if they would care to share, how in the blasted world have they figured out ways to get along with each other.

Upon hitting the trail for home, I think it would be fitting to leave them with a little Chuck Berry music, dark chocolate brownies, and a bottle of Napa Valley Chardonay, and hope like hell they take a different path to the future.

A mouse is sentient, but not what we would would call highly intelligent. I'd be interested in what kind of creature it was, the biology and environment if we're only speaking of sentience . If it was something that came to earth, through its own actions that's a whole different ball game.

Hahaha..great thread.
Some marvellous theories but you know, they already walk among us.

I believe we have had past and will have future lives so in my future life in 3023 and from whatever planet,
I will be sure to check in to SF to see how y'all are gettin' along with these aliens.alien.gif
