Do you put on cat nails on your cat personally or have it done?

I recently got a kitten and am going to have cat plastic caps put over the nails because he sure scratches me. Not on purpose because he is so sweet and am going to love having him around. Just want to protect my dog, furniture, and whatever else there is. I haven't had a cat/kitten (he is an eight week old kitten) in about twenty years. He chose me, I was originally was going to adopt a 1-2 year old cat. Gray tabby and haven't chosen a name yet.

No, you're not out of touch. I didn't know about these things either, until I asked about the declawing price which has skyrocketed to 600-800 up front and no payments. It is inhumane, and I agree, but these look like nails-all colors. Like I said, I haven't had a cat in over 20 years and they are cute. Veterinarians are discouraging declawing and I totally agree. But, this is really different, but cute.
 

What about just using one of the pet nail grinders ? I have found that this works great for my little Poodle (and even on my own toenails), and there is no likelihood of clipping too short like there is when you use a toenail clipper on their toes. Also, it leaves a much smoother end than clipping does.
Those toenails are going to keep growing, so you should start trimming them while he is a kitten, and that way he won’t be alarmed like he will if you wait until he is a full grown cat.
If you put on the fake toenails, you will either have to keep replacing them as the nails grow, or spend a lot of money having the vet do it for you.

You just need to get more scratching posts and train your kitten to use them @fancicoffee13. With having 5 cats indoors, they scratch nothing but their posts.

I bought a 54" tower with 3 scratching posts on it. And I got toys that he is used to and I think that will do fine

How long do they stay on?

Personally, if it was me, I'd go online and research them first. Or call a vet and ask about them.

Ok, I can do that. I am going to start with just trimming the nails and see if I need to go the extra step of the glue on nails. I really don't want to have to do that every 6-8 weeks. I am also thinking about my dog and the nails.
 
I got the toenail grinder from Amazon. Mine are usb rechargeable, and Amazon has a variety of different ones and very affordable prices; so you can pick what works best for you.
They are very quiet, and the noise or the feel (vibration) does not bother my dog at all. He was unsure at first, but now just sits there for me to grind his nails, and then happily runs into the kitchen for his bologna reward that he knows he gets after a nail trim or a bath.

I put a towel in the bathroom sink and put them in there. Be sure to shut the door. Gently press on the pads of the toes and the nail will come out. Just clip the tip. I then brush them, which they like, and give them treats. I’ve had six cats and have never been bitten.

Yeah, it's a really good idea to get them used to nail trimming while they're young.

The rule of thumb is to trim off the clear part, below the pink part. You'll see that pink part when you look closely. Avoid cutting that. It has nerves and a blood vessel.
 
I tried the nail caps years ago and eventually gave up but I'm sure it depends on the cat. I can clip one cat's claws pretty easily but I don't even suggest it to the other one anymore. It's not worth the battle.

I used canned air to teach him not to claw the furniture. We have a tall scratching post and one that just lays flat on the floor. He's pretty good about using his scratchers now.

I so understand Fanci ! I feel like I've needed to wear a suit of armor every since we got our kitten, who is now a cat. She has scratched me so many times and not on purpose either. I saw the kitten caps for nails but doubted they would really work. Plus I was afraid that she'd swallow them. So if you do get them, please let us know how well they work (or don't work).

IMO grinding is better than clipping, which might cause a nail to split.
