Good grief, I wonder how often this goes on in hospitals worldwide....?

A leading pathologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital has been placed on leave after an alleged misdiagnosis led to a patient’s bladder being removed — as well as claims he bullied staff, according to a report.

Dr. Jonathan Epstein, 66, was accused of pressuring other doctors at the world-renowned Baltimore hospital to give second opinions that matched diagnoses made by his wife, Dr. Hillary Epstein, a fellow pathologist, the Washington Post reported.

The news outlet cited a hospital accreditation report by the nonprofit Joint Commission and four people with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Epstein, the hospital’s director of surgical pathology, gave second opinions that agreed with those made by his wife, who works at Chesapeake Urology Associates in Beltsville, Maryland, according to the paper.

In one instance, a patient underwent the removal of his bladder — only to have a post-op analysis show a different diagnosis, according to the Washington Post, which cited the sources and the accreditation report.

The Joint Commission ordered Johns Hopkins to address concerns among staff “regarding a culture of bullying and intimidation in the surgical pathology department,” which it said exposed patients to improper care.

Epstein was placed on administrative leave in May, according to the newspaper.

The cited article is confusing to me. Which Epstein was placed on administrative leave? That was back in May. This is October, so what is the current status of the issue? Also, why is post operative pathology diagnosis done if not to find discrepancies? This article needs further information.

I seriously hope that patients attorney becomes very wealthy from the ensuing bazillion dollar malpractice lawsuit.
Is that the purpose of post operative pathology? Seems a strange department in a hospital. I would bet it is very under funded by the medical system, but heavily funded by the legal profession. Very strange.

Had to read it 2 times.

I guess post operative testing is done to look for cancer, abnormalities or cause that might affect other body parts. In alot of hospitals or even cities the medical community is a club with a code, don't make colleagues look bad.

There is conflict of interests and workplace bullying issues here

Sounds like ongoing assessment for patient support. In each of the 3 cancers where my wife was operated on, they did post operative analysis of the tumors and lymph nodes. She still gets post operative examinations, most recent was last month, 8 years after her last surgery.

I worked at JHH while an undergraduate. Some massive egos inhabit this place, since it is a top five hospital. Also, groundbreaking medical care and research. Gotta take the bad along with the good I suppose.
