He was a firearm instructor for the military who apparently became mentally ill, according to reports. That makes him a rightwing radical? Your political comments are offensive.

This is a horrible tragedy and if is true that he self-reported his thoughts and didn't get help that will make other mentally ill people afraid to come forward for fear they will not get any help. Surely we could wait a minute for facts before making it political in this supposedly not-political forum.

Edited to make it clear that I am not defending this guy or what he did. There are other rumors out there that may make this even worse but I'll wait for facts.

You sure didn't wait a minute before connecting the crime with the fact that he had a mental illness. Not every person who has a mental illness is a dangerous threat to society and it's not as easy as you might think to determine who is and who isn't. Thousands of people seek help for mental problems, most spend a little time in a hospital, get some good medication and go on their way with no problems, you seem to think anyone who seeks help should be locked away forever by "the authorities." Now that would certainly discourage other mentally ill people from seeking help.
 
There are some in this country who don't give a damn how many innocent people are killed. All they care about is being against tougher gun laws and the banning of assault weapons. That way, gun crazies will continue to donate to their campaigns.

Assault weapons are made to hunt one species only. Humans. Why on earth are they still being made and sold?

You might have a point that it's all rumor until there is an official statement from the police.

Are you arguing that a person who doesn't have an illness would do this?

No, I don't think it's easy but I think it would be hard to argue that this man should not have been locked away.

They may offend you, but they're supported by the facts. Have you read the posts he was commenting on via Twitter and Facebook? He was clearly a right-wing radical. He also happened to be a firearm instructor, and ANYONE who committed his acts is mentally ill, imo. I expect you and others could guess whose posts he liked, etc. I'm not going into that here, other than stating the obvious.
 
I'd get lost in Acadia National Park for awhile. This guy is wily enough to score a boat at Frenchman's Bay and then up to New Brunswick. Depends on how clever he really is.

Well, it's up to the site admin, but my comment is political only in acknowledging the evidence thus far presented. Are we really in a place where commenting on the evidence, if that evidence clearly points to someones politics, is to be censored? I don't even mention a party, or leader. It's a shame that some people have such thin skin, that even reading "right wing radical" is enough to have them getting upset and reporting a post.

I am a smartarse,but I wasn't being a smartarse here. My understanding is that the US Canadian border was and probably still is fairly porous.
We see comments about mental health and taking his firearms off him. That's not very constructive, there's hardly a licensed firearms holder who hasn't had some sort of health issues, physical or mental. Physical health issues range from a headache to an aneurysm, mental health issues are parallel, from feeling anxious to outright paranoiac delusional thinking. In both scenarios nothing is obvious to the untrained eye.
Thoughts and prayers and all the rhetoric about what should have been done are smoke in the wind, here today and gone tomorrow. This is a a particularly USA problem which a divided country can not and will not address.

That is 100% incorrect. As I've written (that you apparently failed to read), I based it on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. I saw the content on them, and the ONLY conclusion is that he is right wing. Go read them yourself and tell me he's left wing. I dare you.

It is YOU that is showing a bias here. I'm saying nothing more than the facts as we know them today. They offend you for some reason, that's it. The facts won't change.

I agree but I think our real problem is the crazy belief that the 2ns amendment exists to ensure that the citizenry is sufficiently well armed to over throw a tyrannical government so that gun ownership is not only a right but a duty. Won’t have to worry about ballots if you have enough bullets. It’s crazy.

What's crazy to me is that a whole lot of people think the problem with guns, and the abundance of guns, is to have more guns, and more powerful guns. So it's a never ending spiral. But if someone says, "perhaps we can have some checks in place", they're jumped on with a voracity greater than these shooters.

Some politician is going to say we need to get a grip of the gun problem. Other politicians will say it's in the constitution and a God given right. The NRA will spend more lobbying money, and nothing at all with change. And so it goes until the next atrocity.

Yes. A Columbia University research study found that of the 1,800 mass murders, only 8% of all mass shooters were diagnosed with a severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or severe bipolar disorder.

Maybe the authorities should lock you up as it looks like you have 92% chance of being a mass shooter.

I "liked" Vaughan's post because I had read the same things he had.

Della, despite the snark I think you've brought up something important. The mental health industry is not nearly effective enough in either identifying people with problems, helping them overcome their problems or preventing their actions.

They are underfunded, under supported and the people suffering from mental illness are in desperate need of help. On top of all that not nearly enough is known about how the human brain and emotions work.

And it's not likely to change as long as people continue to blame the tool (gun) and politics for mass shootings. It's so easy to do that and avoid having to spend the money needed to do something to support the mental health system.

I was wondering that too. I wonder if he made no effort to cover his face for exactly that reason to make people they're looking for a suspect with a beard. Or his 'episode' came pretty quick.

They said he was a in a military hospital for a pysch reasons for 2 weeks?
 
Maine! Maine?? Maine has the oldest population in the country. They must mean California or Florida or New York.
