22 killed in mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine

Shave off the beard changed his clothes and produced a fake ID.
I really don't know, I was just asking.
Maine shares a border 611 miles/983 km long between New Brunswick & Quebec Canada. Much of this area is densely forested with few roads and only a handful of official border crossings. It would be relatively simple for someone of his experience to hop over the border undetected in the woods somewhere.

Not sure why he'd want to come to Canada. He'd be out of his element, especially if he went to Northern New Brunswick or Quebec as I doubt he speaks French.

Watching CNN where the cops have the suspects home surrounded and are trying to get him to come out, cops speaking on loudspeaker, but the stupid cnn journo keeps
running her mouth, so you can't make out what the cops
are saying.....wow so stupid......

As I'm just finishing certificate 4 in Mental Health, I can see a few myths need busting.
The mentally ill are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.
Often there's no cure but recovery is possible.
Apparently less than 10% of gun crime involves the mentally ill.
This is like groundhog day, another mass shooting stateside...

Well, it's up to the site admin, but my comment is political only in acknowledging the evidence thus far presented. Are we really in a place where commenting on the evidence, if that evidence clearly points to someones politics, is to be censored? I don't even mention a party, or leader. It's a shame that some people have such thin skin, that even reading "right wing radical" is enough to have them getting upset and reporting a post.

How are we supposed to have dialog in a forum called Current News and Hot Topics when you can't write "right wing"? I suspect you'd not have been bothered if he had been left wing. You'd actually have it censored. All part of the cancel culture, I guess. Wow. But you do you.
Your comment re: his political leanings are more or less typical of his behavior. That,

sir, is political in and of itself.

I sincerely hope Matrix closes this thread post haste.

this is what I thought, given what my husband has told me in the past of his grandmothers' home in Maine that it was right next to the Canadian border ... I was confused earlier when someone in CT said they were very close to the shooter...

Your hubby's Gramma's place was likely in Eastern Maine somewhere. Lewiston is in the southwest of Maine not close to the Canadian border really. Much closer to the New Hampshire border if he wants to leave the State of Maine.

Got ya..(y). this is what I was explaining on another thread... being a Brit I don't have a sense of how huge the different States are.. and their borders..

There are lots of French Canadians in Maine. Someone interviewed Card's cousin whose surname is Mercier, so he may very well speak some French.
I didn't know that - interesting 🤔 Guess it makes sense though as French is the primary language in both Quebec and in the top half of New Brunswick & there's a lot of back and forth between those two Canadian Provinces and the State of Maine.

Gee You guys/gals are pretty depressing! My girl and I are flying to Washington, DC and we are staying in that city for a full 10 days. Guess I better watch my back.

The thing about US gun violence is that it never ends. People talk about it. Political leaders always say the same bull, "Our prayers go out to the families" but what the hack, nothing is ever done. As a Non American it seems to me that there is, south of the border, a great totally hopeless situation when it comes to gun control. The violence will just continue on and on. Stay tuned for the next massive killing; coming to a town very near you.

standoff was taking place at a Bowdoin, Maine property on Thursday believed to be connected to Lewiston shooting suspect Robert Card, as it emerged a note he left at home was a suicide note addressed to his son.

FBI agents at 7:20pm were telling a person inside: 'Come out with your hands up.'

It was unclear who they were talking to. Card, his parents and his brother and sister-in-law all live in the area.

At 8.42pm another law enforcement convoy, led by a SWAT team armored car, drove out from the area of the two houses owned by the Card family.

Meanwhile a police helicopter continued to circle overhead. Other police teams and their vehicles remained by the homes and on the roadway.

The agents, using a bullhorn, had told a person to come towards them, and asked if anyone else was inside. Helicopters were overhead, and drones.

It was unclear if anyone was inside the house.

Connor Clemente, a reporter with local news channel WMTWTV, said he heard the FBI ordering Card himself to come out of the house.

He tweeted that he heard: 'Robert Card, you're under arrest. We know you're inside, come out with your hands up, we don't want anyone to get hurt.'

Maine state police said that the orders to 'come out with your hands up' were 'standard', and refused to comment on who was inside.

i live in massachusetts and it's non stop reporting. they keep broadcasting "Breaking News" and they again repeat the same scenario. i tweeted "can we limit the news to when something real happens". I found myself watching the food channel just to escape it and then i just turned off the television.

The firearm he used quite possibly could be a stolen U.S. Army weapon since he was a firearms instructor in the Army.
Beyond that, there are federal forms to be filled out when anyone purchases a civilian firearm and I'm sure someone somewhere is cross referencing the files.
I haven't purchased a firearm in the past 30 years, so someone with current knowledge please correct me, but last I knew the federal forms that a person fills out to buy a firearm remains at the point of purchase. This being in states that only regulate firearms purchases by what the federal government required. I lived in a city that required handgun registration and that paperwork was filed with at the police dept prior to removing the gun from the store, if purchased in that city. If a handgun was purchased outside the city limits, the gun was brought into the police station for serial number verification and the paperwork was filled out then.

Latest updates says 18 killed, not 22, and 13 injured, not 50 to 60. All this shows is that the early reports are almost always wrong.

They are still hunting for the shooter as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

The victims of the Maine mass shooting have been confirmed as a retired mechanic, a mom-of-one bowling alley employee who was shot while calling 911, and a bar manager.

Bob Violette, 76, was killed in the massacre that erupted inside Just In Time Recreation bowling alley, formally known as Sparetime, and Schemengee's Bar and Grille on Wednesday evening, according to his daughter-in-law Cassandra.

The second confirmed victim is Tricia Asselin, 53, who worked at the bowling alley.

Relatives confirmed that the third victim was Joseph Walker, 57, who was a bar manager at Schemengee's. And Joshua Seal, 36, a father of four, was also confirmed dead by his wife.

The fifth named victim was Bryan MacFarlane, 40, who was playing cornhole with his deaf friends. Arthur Strout, 41, and Ron Morin were also confirmed dead by family and friends.

Peyton Brewer-Ross, 40, and Steve Vozzella, 45, were also identified as victims by their family, friends, and colleagues.

A 14-year-old boy, Aaron Young, and his father Bill were later confirmed dead by the high school where the boy was a freshman.

A total of 18 people were killed. Seven died in the bowling alley, six in the bar and the remaining three at hospital.

Think for a minute how this carnage might have been different, if he had a bolt action rifle that requires the bolt to be manipulated after EVERY SHOT. Having a semi automatic rifle, and lots of loaded magazines, greatly increased his ability to kill people, fast. I pity the Americans who have to live with such a terrible "domestic terrorism " situation hanging over their heads every day. Make no mistake, this is terrorism. It is just not associated with a terror group, or ideology . JimB.
Yep, it would have made a huge difference to the amount of people he killed, it would have allowed more of them to find cover.

Much of Thursday’s search focused on a property belonging to one of Card’s relatives in rural Bowdoin, where trucks and vans full of armed agents from the FBI and other agencies eventually surrounded a home. Card and anyone else inside were repeatedly ordered to surrender.

“You need to come outside now with nothing in your hands. Your hands in the air,” police said through a loudspeaker. In most instances when police execute warrants — even for suspects wanted for violent crimes — they move quickly to enter the home.

But hours later, after repeated announcements and a search, authorities moved off — and it was still unclear whether Card had ever been at the location, state police said.

Richard Goddard, who lives on the road where the search took place, knows the Card family. Robert Card, who is four years younger, knows the terrain well, Goddard said.

“This is is his stomping ground. He grew up here,” he said. “He knows every ledge to hide behind, every thicket.”

Several homes were being searched and every lead pursued in the hunt for Card, a 40-year-old with firearms instructor training. Authorities said he should be considered armed and dangerous and not approached.

Card is suspected of opening fire with at least one rifle at a bar and a bowling alley Wednesday in Lewiston, which is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Bowdoin and is Maine’s second-largest city. The evening shootings killed 18 people and wounded 13 others, with three people still hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

Authorities haven’t said how many guns were used or how they were obtained.

Schools, doctor’s offices and grocery stores closed and people stayed behind locked doors in cities as far as 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the scenes of the shootings. Maine’s largest city, Portland, closed its public buildings, while Canada Border Services Agency issued an “armed and dangerous” alert to its officers stationed along the U.S. border.

April Stevens lives in the same neighborhood where one of the shootings took place. She turned on all her lights overnight and locked her doors. She knew someone killed at the bar and another person injured who needed surgery.

“We’re praying for everyone,” Stevens said through tears.

The attacks stunned a state of only 1.3 million people that has one of the country’s lowest homicide rates: 29 killings in all of 2022.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills promised to do whatever was needed to find Card and to “hold whoever is responsible for this atrocity accountable ... and to seek full justice for the victims and their families.”

Why is it the numbers of those killed keeps changing. I'd heard it was 31 at one point, now it seems it's 18.
