But Paris is so close to us in the UK! You can go from London to Paris in as little as 2 hours and 15 minutes, and it's a straight shot in the Eurostar!

Paris is incredible. The architecture, the ambience, I think it's amazing. If visiting is one of your dreams, then don't give up on it, I'd say it's a doable one!

The pickpockets... ooooh the damn pickpockets in Paris..are a blight on the city... and what's worse is they come to London in droves because Paris is just 2 hours away..and spend all day on the tube in innocent looking gangs of mainly girls and young women..looking all the world like backpackers.. pickpocketing people..
 

@timoc It's been a long while since I visited Paris but, we visited quite a few times and had a great time.

The Eiffel Tower was always really busy when we went so we didn't bother queuing but, we found nice restaurants and, as @VaughanJB mentioned, the architecture is great and the EuroStar made it an easy journey.

While we didn't have any problems, I don't doubt @hollydolly's comments about pickpockets as, unfortunately, they are rife in most big cities so, it is wise to be as careful as you can be when visiting. I once had a purse stolen from my bag in a nice Cornish village. Fortunately, I usually carry two purses; one with a small amount of money in it and another, well hidden, with more money and bank cards etc. The theory being that pickpockets watch you, see you pay for something and then steal your purse. They must have been disappointed! ;)

Gave $100 tip on a $20 breakfast to an elderly waitress, at Christmas time.
Gave a $40 tip to a waitress who was having a difficult time with a large table with unruly people. Told her, no matter what tip they gave it wouldn't' have been enough to have to deal with them.
So many times, I lost count.
I am so blessed with success in my life that I can only explain it by God telling me I need to give back, give some of it to less fortunate people I come across.
I don't believe in reciting scriptures, but after ongoing reading of the bible, I realize it is much better to walk in his footsteps and help others.

Success is equal parts giving and receiving. It reconciles the soul. Success without giving is a harsh way to go through life.....in my opinion

I noticed a homeless guy sleeping outside near my home. He was there asleep, and I felt sorry for him. So when I got back home I made him a sandwich and grabbed couple cans of Coke. I went down, and left them near his feet.

When walking the dog the next day I noticed he'd gone, and the sandwich and coke had been thrown into some bushes. :D
 
Going into Kroger yesterday I saw my reflection in the doors and one pant leg had ridden up above my sock, making me look even sillier than usual. I started trying to push it down with my cane and all of a sudden a nice woman was squatting in front of me, fixing it for me. Then she held the door for me and got me a little cart to push. This all happened very quickly while I was thanking her and calling her my angel for the day.

She had a young face, but long gray dreads, so I couldn't guess her age. I'm always grateful when someone helps me but I'm extra touched when it's a black person helping an old white lady like me. No doubt she has plenty of reasons to be bitter against whites, but instead shows loving kindness to all. I'm getting a little misty just thinking about her.

Naughty but nice, you can say that again. We were at a fabulous swing/jazz night last night. At the end of the evening I went and complimented the singer. He bent down from the stage and shook hands. When I asked what future play dates they had he called the lady pianist to bring one of the promotional leaflets. She too bent down from the stage as she handed me the leaflet.

I tell you Timoc, low cut dresses should be banned, they are like eye magnets, naughty but nice? I'll say!

Non, je regrette mais je n'ai pas eu la chance de visiter Paris ou la Tour Eiffel. C'était sur notre liste de visites dans notre retraite.

Sorry, no, I regret it but I haven't had the chance to visit Paris or the Eiffel Tower. It was on our list of planned visits in our retirement years.
 
I've always considered myself a nice person. Many have given it as a compliment. However, I'm usually misjudged harshly and potential friend discard me quickly. So my song for now, until things turn around. Thank you!


I'll add this one as well, as I've had some nice friends which I've lost over the years, including my father, my son and now my best friend who was my husband...

As Canadians, my wife & I are somewhat adapted to cooler weather.;) Our lifestyle in a mountain-rural acreage involves us with planting, harvest, etc from mid spring to mid fall. Also, we don't really enjoy crowds. So we've often travelled in the shoulder seasons, when projected weather for the chosen region isn't too cool. Airline tickets have been cheaper then too... and we can stand a bit of rain.

So with this inclination, over 15 years or so, we visited rural Scotland, London, Paris, Avignon, Venice, Florence, Rome, Bruge, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and southern Sweden. Stayed in Oaxaca, Mexico for a month, (after Christmas... cheap tickets & accommodations). If the streets weren't crowded, these places have still been exciting enough for us! And interesting.

Don't carry significant cash or a credit card in a wallet in your coat or pants pocket — carry them in a money belt under your clothes. Slip into a public-washroom stall to access any needed cash or credit card, if you know you'll require some/it. A few bills or your card in your hand, with that hand in a pocket, is more prudent. (In Amsterdam, when we were there, some businesses actually refused cash, and only wanted a credit or debit card. Due to counterfeiting)

And we found we could get current on the latest street scams by consulting up-to-date advice, for particular cities, on the internet.
