Overheard at a garage sale this morning.....

I was taking my morning walk and stopped by a garage sale that a neighbor down the street was having.

A woman drove up and started looking at things. She was showing interest in a couple pieces of equipment (I have no idea what they were) and the homeowner said, "Now, I have no idea if those even work. That's why I put $1 on them".

She got somewhat huffy and said, "Well, if they don't work, you should give them away for free!"

He said, "OK, you can have them for free."

She snapped, "I don't want something that's BROKEN!" and walked back to her car.

Unnecessary. This is why I'd rather burn down my house than have another garage sale.

Oh yes, the world is full of some rather simple, stupid and backward folks. It's actually no problem except when they get into positions of power.

Where I live they plan to spend upwards of $184 million digging up 2 dead bodies in a landfill. At the same time, our local library is crying for more books and more staff. Like I said, the world is full of some rather simple, stupid and backward folks.

Is that the price of the gas? :ROFLMAO:

I don't get why people think it's OK to treat others that way. Nobody forced that woman to stop by and nobody expected her to buy that item. The guy was honest enough to tell her about it too. I guess I've grown tired of the perpetually outraged. They are everywhere.

John. You need to explain to those here who don't know, WHY a certain group of people are demanding that the Provincial Government SHOULD spend millions of dollars to excavate an entire land fill site, to possibly find 2 missing women? And then explain why it is a bone of contention for so many people who are not members of that complaining group. Context is important, right ? JimB.

Yep, that's 2023. There's a feeling of entitlement everywhere, even if it's a yard sale with items for a dollar. What do they expect, a 12 month guarantee?

Let's face it, if this person had taken the item, it only would have led to complaints later. Far better to let them go empty handed.

The craziest thing is that later, after you'd moved on, someone else there might have come over and either explained to the seller what the equipment did and how too determine if they worked, suggested a slightly higher asking price or gladly paid the reasonable price because they could use them. If i overheard such an exchange i know i would have gone over to take a look.

I am more curious about what the items were than the unpleasant woman. They could have been anything including simple exercise aids that only 'work' if you do--if you use them correctly. Or manual cooking/baking tools meant to make food look fancy. So not actually 'broke' just an unknown to the seller who was either gifted them or was left them by someone no longer in the household.

There are always complainers and helpers in the world. When i can't avoid the former i tend to treat them like unpleasant background noise, just glad when it stops or moves on. The latter i am grateful for and also try to be one.

He might be concerned with getting fussed at for being 'political'. i had an idea what it might be, did a search which seemed to confirm my thought. The same problem of indigenous women being targeted exists in the USA as well. Tho more efforts are being made these days.

I would like to do that but apparently we are not supposed to discuss politics here and that issue is very, very political. It's also a very expensive idea. A local election used this issue as a campaign issue. Only time will tell who wins and what the outcome will be but it sure has divided the country around here into 2 warring camps.
