Why DO people choose powerful dangerous dogs?

The Ohio Supreme Court in 2007 ruled that "Pit Bulls" are viscous breeds.
I think you meant "vicious " not viscous. Viscous refers to the lubrication quality of a liquid . GRIN. JImB.

I have mostly had Maltese which are very small dogs. I had a 5lb Maltese that if she had been a big dog I would have had to put her to sleep because she was aggressive and overly protective.

I did rescue a 84 lb husky shepherd mix that bit part of his owner’s lip off but he had a massive untreated double ear infection and was being hit routinely. This dog was very loving and appropriately protective of me.

A week after rescuing him he saved me from an attacking off leash pit bull. I would have been dead without him fighting for both our lives and he wasn’t young at 9 years old. The owner finally pulled the pit off of him and ran away. I was lucky enough to have him for 5 years and still miss him greatly. He also was protective of my 3 Maltese.

So what do you think? Should we have the right to choose any dog we please?
Yes, we should all have the right to choose any pet dog that we want in our family, regardless of breed. A responsible pet owner will research the breed and know if they are capable of training and socializing the dog.

Although many lowlifes may get a dog like a Staffordshire Terrier for the wrong reasons, abuse them, keep them on thick short chains outdoors, teach them to attack people and other pets, as in dog fighting....there are many good people who have well socialized sweet Pitbulls who are super friendly with all people, children and other dogs and pets. I've met many at the loose dog park over the years who I worried about at the sight of them, but soon called them over, petted them, and watched them interact with my dogs in a peaceful and loving way.

There are no bad dogs, any breed can be loved, cared for and socialized to reliably get along with other people, children and pets of all kinds. People who refuse to properly train and socialize any puppy, should not own a dog......period.

Agree 100% - but how can we ensure that they don't? It's a bit late when it's bitten a childs face off!
Nothing is certain with any breed of dog, you can do what is needed to train and socialize them at an early age, and monitor them when necessary.

You can't ensure a dog will not bite, you can just supervise. Even a young child can be aggressive, harm the pets or his baby brother by stabbing him with a knife or hitting him in the head with a rock. As parents or dog owners, we have the responsibility.

You always hear about the attacks on the news, but you don't hear about all the dogs who are loving and gentle with their families. If it bleeds, it leads, people don't want to hear much of the positives on the news.

There are bad dog owners and bad parents, unfortunately....but I believe the good ones are much higher in numbers. If you're too lazy to correctly train a dog, give them drugs and alcohol to calm them down, you should not have any pets.....ever.

Yesterday we were walking our dog and saw a loose large Staffy wandering about.
No sign of the owner. Fortunately it headed away after looking at us for a chilling moment. We carried on home, both of us spooked. I am too frightened now to go out. I've worried so much about what could have happened - it doesn't take much for me as I already suffer anxiety and panic attacks. Our nice walks have been a good thing to relax, now I can't do even that much.

That's a shame. Would you feel better if you carried some kind of spray? I've heard that a small bottle of dish detergent water is effective because the spray temporarily hurts bad enough to stop them. Does anyone know if these things work or just makes them angrier?

I carry a travel size hairspray. I will spray an attacking dog in the eyes. I assume it would at least put it off. I had it ready yesterday in my hand.
Fish detergent is a great idea too.
Why should we be powerless?
