Word of the Day - Toponymic surname and Toponyms

StarSong

Awkward is my Superpower
Toponymic surname - noun

A name derived from the name of a place.
In The Three Musketeers, D'Artagnon's name is a toponymic surname as it means "from Artagnan" in French. Artagnon is a small town in SW France.

Toponyms in general refer to names associated with geographic features (Lakeshore Drive), or places named after specific events (Battle Creek, Michigan, for instance).

On an aside - I've long been familiar with these kinds of names, of course, but just this morning stumbled over the word that defines them.

Very interesting post, @StarSong 🤩
Thanks for sharing that post topic and the terms, toponymic and toponyms, with us!
Thanks, @Kaila. I seldom add new Words of the Day. Only bother folks with them when I come across words that seem particularly useful, clever or fall under the category: Who knew there was a word to describe that!

(I'm still quite taken with my previous post: eggcorns!)
