Have you ever been stung by Bees/wasps or the like?

Another case, involving black flies and potential anaphylactic shock regarded a co-worker of mine. She was highly allergic to any stinging insect. This happened in the Tongass NF, the uninhabited Zarembo Is, near Wrangell AK, which is in SE AK. We worked on the island in 8 day stretches in the worlds only temperate rain forest - 2-300" rain per year. The trees were huge and the brush was tall and thick, also had features called muskegs which had a lot of standing water. Rain gear was useless - we just got used to being wet.

The job required walking or hiking through the woods for 10 hours a day. The mosquitos and black flies were thick. We covered our hard hats and clothes w DEET to try to ward them off. We'd make a smokey fire for lunch everyday just so we could eat in peace and it was so wet we didn't even bother to put them out.

Well one day old Deb didn't take precautions and got bitten by these black flies which we called white socks and every bite just erupted in an angry boil. This is how we found out that she was susceptible to shock.

She had never told anyone and furthermore didn't bring her epipen kit with her daily, nor did she even have it on the island!!! I'm pretty sure she would have died if we'd gotten into a hornets nest.

I have been stung by bees in the past a couple of times, I now have Yellow Jacket Wasps around my home. The traps work well, but I have been stung by those wasps, around three stings at once. Like Marie, it hurt initially and then just itched like heck for a couple of weeks. Been several years since I had a sting.

Jelly fish stings can really hurt. So far I’ve been stung twice. It’s like getting a dozen bee stings or more. Urinating on bee stings doesn’t help but if it did, I woulda done it. šŸ˜
I was stung by a small jelly fish when I was young, just brushed by the tentacles. It was hurting a bit and itchy, but nothing severe, thank goodness. Think I was treated with calamine lotion.

I’ve swam right into them doing long distance swimming so it was a bit more than being lightly brushed by. On one arm I counted 5 distinct lines. They turn really red but fade within a week or so. They itched with they were healing though. Calamine is nice but so is real aloe from the plant itself. We have a huge aloe Vera plant that I use occasionally .
Stormy weather brings them closer to shore.
They are interesting creatures though. I just watched the movie NYAD about a 64 year woman who swam from Cuba to Florida. 110 miles with no getting out of the water
Anyway, she got stung by a man of war jelly fish right in the face. She literally had to pull it off her face. She almost died but they had that shot that saved her life. It’s a great movie btw …. Worth watching.

I was stung by them too. When I lived down south.

I was digging in a compost pile to fill my wheelbarrow and dug into a yellow jacket ground nest........ohhhhh, got stung about 3 or 4 times! Quickly picked plantain that grows all over the yard and paths. Then tear it to juice it up real fast and put that on the sting spots. It works on just about any type of sting or bite. I also got stung by a wasp in my friend's deck and I did the same thing while she wondered if I had gone crazy or what.

When I was a kid, I didn't know that you are not supposed to pick up a bee. I found out why. Over the years, I've been stung by bumble bees, wasps, hornets. I also didn't know that some bees had burrows in the ground until I stepped on it. That hurt like hell. The hornet sting, hurt for days.
Yeah, yellow jackets are known for that. They are in my opinion the worst of all!

Yes when I was a kid by bees a few times, my foot was so swollen I could not walk, and years back we lived in apt complex that had carpenter bees my husband got stung several times, it was awful living there. At our current home this year wasps were really bad, we were constantly spraying for them.

Those rotten yellow jackets. They will land and sting several times. The experts say to run into the house. What they don't say is the damn things are releasing a strong pheromone gas while they are stinging you.

For a week I had yellow jackets and flies crawling through any tiny gap. I had them covering the windows ā€Šinside my house. Yes they were on alert. Made my screens useless. It was like a nightmare, but it finally weakened and wore off.

As bad as they are when angry, yellow jackets are our friends. I stood quietly watching their nest after being stung. They come out, grab a pesky gnat and take it inside, that's what they do, all day. Be kind.

One of DH's great grandfathers died of complications to a bee sting. I had kind of half a sting from a bee (long story), it itched. Then along comes our son, who is very allergic to bee stings! So 2 epi pens to give him enough time to get to the hospital. Fortunately he doesn't have to pay for the epi pens..

Had several wasp stings……don’t see many wasps these days.
My garden attracts bees-even had a nest a couple of Summers ago.
They leave you alone.

Am I the only one who remembers the character played by Walter Brennan (Eddie) in the movie To Have And Have Not, who asked Lauren Bacall's character (Marie "Slim" Browning) "Have you ever been stung by a dead bee?"

79 years later, I still don't understand....

Yellow jackets can nest in the ground, undetectable until it’s too late. On my riding mower a few years back while wearing shorts, I was stung on both legs. The pain was agonizing, so bad you almost wish you could die so it will stop. My tree trimmers refuse to work if they detect a nest in a tree…
