Try to find potting soil this time of year

Try HomeDepot or Loews. In my location, Los Angeles, CA, they are stocked up all year. Our growing season here, is 12 months per year.

Same thing happened at Walmart but with wild bird seed. Come fall I start feeding the birds and when I went to Walmart to buy some the shelves were bare. I asked an employee if they had some bird food elsewhere in the store and he said, "Oh, that's a seasonal item, we won't have any for awhile." I was so shocked I said, "Seasonal? This IS the season! They don't have anything else to eat!" Next time I was in the store, the shelves were full of wild bird food.

I don't know if my outburst had anything to do with it (probably not) or they were just waiting for a shipment. But I still couldn't believe what that employee said.

Stores that carry it have it backwards. They stock it in the spring when people are putting plants outdoors. Then in autumn, when you need to pot up or re-pot plants that have outgrown their pots over the summer, it's nowhere to be found.
If you can't find it in the stores, order online like @Ruthanne did.

If you don't see it, ask. They may have put it away thinking it's not going to sell. No dedicated plant nurseries in your area?

I don't use my credit card to rack up debt. I use it when need for convenience. And some online things like my Covered California, cable, cell phone. There are times when it's best to have. When I had to take my kitty Chloe, when she was alive, to the emergency vet, I didn't care what it cost. I just handed over my CC. Came out to a grand. And I was OK with it because she was OK.

But you need a credit or debit card to do that.
I'm sorry but I agree with Pepper's laughing emoji here. Deb, I can' believe you don't have a credit card. You couldn't rent a car. They are just the thing to have sometimes. I pay mine off every month. Just sent my bill in today.

Same here. I have several credit cards and I pay them off in full every month.

Next time that happens, you might consider cracked corn.
50 LB bag for less than $20usd
They're in feed stores and some extended hardware stores

Birds love it
