Thanks @FastTrax for posting this movie, had forgotten about it.
It reminded me of the secret Cold War Space program, 'Manned Orbiting Laboratory', planned for a crew
to monitor all sorts of delevoplments.
Having been in SAC the majority of my career, remember the tension each time a potential rise in the DEFCON
level was possible.
Along with 'Broken Arrows' and 'Covered Wagons', we were kept pretty busy.
A favorite movie about SAC is FAIL-SAFE (1964), starring Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau.
The military was struggling with new technologies and the limitations of the systems.

I remember that time in the 50's living in close proximity to The Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Brooklyn Army Terminal or just being in New York City itself and lacking weapons defense capability or unable to actually respond in kind or that we'd be one of the last counterforce targets or one of the first countervalue targets because of being the most populated civilian area in the Northeast. Either way we were going to get hit. In the 90's the FAS brought up the failed notion that the then CD forgot a/k/a refused to address the issue of where to place the bodies of citizens already dying of radiation posioning in the fallout shelters, addressing the growing solid and liquid waste disposal and other critical sanitation crises.
