Keeping unusual animal companions

I'm reading The Penguin Lessons by Tom Michell and it is so delightful. I never knew penguins could be so entertaining.
I loved Ring of Bright Water' by Gavin Maxwell - about otters. A most beautiful tale.

It got me wondering about people who keep unusual pets. I knew one person who kept two rats, another keeps snakes. I must admit I've only had dogs and cats. Dogs being my favourite.

So has anyone here got an unusual animal companion?

I have had a hamster, a Rhode Island Red hen, a pygmy goat, a boa constrictor and now of course, have a house bunny. I don't think they are really unusual pets but not everyone has them.

Okay, I can get onboard with a hen, a sweet li'l bunny, and a goat... but a boa constrictor?! Nope, show me to the door right then and there! 😲 @katlupe

We have had all kinds of pets over the years. Chinchillas can be cute, but a PITA. a Ferret in the mix. Several that fall into the farm animal category. Had a Doe that would come visit.
Several different Black snakes, I would catch them someplace and bring home and turn loose. We handled many at different times caught raiding for eggs or chicks. Spanky and Sparky were 2... Sparky LOVED hiding in my tool box. You pull open a draw and there lies a 6 foot Black Snake... just looking at you. It felt like a bolt of electricity hitting you hence her name.

But the all time winner for a strange pet.... a Ground Hog. The mother got hit, and we rescued this cute little cuddly thing. Nursed it with an eyedropper till it started eating. It ran free in the house, used a litterbox like a cat, built a nest under couch. You could call him and he would come lay on your lap for a belly rub, and sit up on a chair at the table and eat.
The funniest thing was it watched my parents smoke, and one day sitting at the table, picked up my mothers cigarette with both hands and put it in his mouth, Im guess trying to eat, But took a puff... Man what a racket squealing, took off running and hid under the couch. He stayed 2 summers before he took off.

That is fantastic! Made me laugh. Groundhogs are such characters.
I had never seen one so I looked it up. They look very cute.
