I am looking for a vinyl flannel backed (to stay in place) tablecloth, dark brown size 60 X 40 rectangle and I can't find that size. I can only find a 54 x whatever. A friend is going to put elastic in it to stay on a table. Why do why only come in a 54 inch x whatever? I would even buy material if I could get a good buy.

Thank you!

This was a question that my wife asked long before the internet. The fabric shop proprietor explained that 54 inches is the industry standard, but you won't believe why?

Back in the day before there were any motorised delivery vans, horsedrawn carriages used to be 54 inches wide. Fabrics were made exactly 54 inches wide to be able to be transported, and that rule stuck ever since. Fast forward to today, you’ll often find most fabrics to be 54 inches wide measuring between the two selvages when laid out. A selvage is the strip of excess fabric on each side of a fabric. Whenever you’re able to see a clear selvage, you can expect the printed (usable) part of the fabric in between to be about 54 to 55 inches wide.

Thanks very interesting,so what is the solution, thank you!

You can buy vinyl w/flannel backing at Walmart in the fabric section from a bolt. You may not be able to find brown, but they do have several nice prints available the last time I looked. Since your table is 40" wide, that would give you a 7" drape on both sides & then buy enough to give you 7" drape on both ends (54" wide x 74" long). Fabric stores will also have this, but you best prices will be at Walmart.

If you want it fit snugly, your friend would just have to trim it to fit to the size needed before adding elastic.
