When my father was retired and his 70's, I was amazed by the number of people at the bank, pharmacy, etc. that knew him by name. Once, we were going through the drive-through at the bank. He was in the passenger seat and they asked "how are you Mr. ******?" I said, fine and the teller said "I was talking to your father".
I thought it was amusing at the time, but now I find myself slipping into that role. At Whole Foods, there is a woman that sees me frequently and says "Hi friend". At the grocery store, there is a woman that says "How are you, my friend?" At the dry cleaners, they know me and we frequently talk about what we've been up to. I have a 70 year-old acquaintance at my gym who always gives me a fist bump and asks how I am.
I'm actually grateful for the social interaction now that I'm retired. Do any of you have similar interactions in your everyday lives?
