I only rode a school bus for one year. When I was 5, I had to walk over a mile to school, in the dark, in the snow (of course, it goes without saying that it was uphill both ways.......) wearing a dress.

yep same here ..except they don't wait at bus stops...if only... instead they clog up the roads where the school gates are... they are a big problem. Most of these kids live within one mile or less from their schools...
 

I remember we girls never wore slacks to school, only dresses and skirts. We didnt get much snow, where I lived then but I walked -
and from grades Kindergarten to 6th grade and that school was just a block away , then in Junior High school ,it took about 1/2 hour to walk there and I was so cold when I got to the junior high school-but in High school, I was able to take a bus.

In those days they had real people cooking the school lunches with real food!
It was always delicious. For 50 cents in high school I got a full meal for 35 cents and then could get dessert or a bowl of the best vegetable soup I ever ate. 7 cents. But at some point I just spent 35 cents on lunch because a small Pizza place opened and for 15 cents I could get a piece of pizza to eat on the way home.

In New Jersey we didn't call them pizzas in those days - they were called Tomato Pies.
 

the. only school photo I have , taken in 1963

most are wearing school uniform.. some are not, I don't know why, because it was a rule .The school colours were Navy blue sweater, skirt, blazer and navy striped tie.. boys wore grey or blue shirts, ties and grey or black shorts . I'm wearing full school uniform as always

i never had books to carry,one book for home work stuffed down me sock,ruler down the other,,i traveled light lol
 
didnt,we had no need to,we studied at school,,home work was opptional,,,,,,exams?11 plus was only exam,,,we had tests at school,and every term you were told if yo were ok,or an idiot,if you were no good,you were put in a learners class,,i went through school in an A stream class till i left

..however little kids in primary school now.. are having to carry heavy rucksacks, you'd think they were going on. hike..

Yup, I had a similar book bag in elementary school. In Jr and Sr high sometimes boys would carry my books home for me or a carful of boys would drive the girls and their books home so we didn't have to carry anything. Many of my friends drove cars to school and from school so we often got rides.
 
Always fascinating to see how differently people dressed and hairstyles in different eras. Notice how girls wore dresses and skirts in that era. Probably a reason I've always enjoyed looking at female legs. One can find lots of photos of grade school and high school 1960s and 1970s era kids on Yahoo after searching with say "1960s california high school photos", under their Images tab.

Above photo was a 1966 public junior high class in Monterey, CA. Lots of military families in that area, so a greater ethnic mix. Again notice the way they dressed, casual formal. Also how boys still had short hair.

This next image is a 1971 suburban Los Angeles high school class. Notice how some girls are now wearing pants. Notice how some boys now have long hair.
 
I attended the same school for all twelve grades. The grade school was in one building, the junior high in another and the high school had three buildings. They kept lopping grades off after me and the campus finally ended up being just the high school.

We had cold snowy winters but it was considered dorky to wear your coat between buildings for some reason, so most people put their coats in their lockers and braved the elements to hurry between buildings. Sometimes you were lucky to have two of your classes consecutively in one building but usually there was a trudge across campus in the freeze.

No trousers for girls, of course, so I was in a perpetual state of frozen-ness from November to April.

We carried our books in our arms. Book bags were also considered dorky. It would have been SO much easier to use a book bag, but "fashion" was everything.......

And of course, wearing a hat would crush your 'do, so I usually had a frozen head, too.

Just out of curiosity did anyone ever try to rationalize that to you and if so did they convince you? Did you and your friends have any theories about why that was the rule?

It sure was! And now we look back at the ‘fashion’ and wonder what we were thinking.
