First post and not sure if I'm doing it correctly. I discovered this forum only yesterday while searching for ways to combat loneliness and make connections. I retired at the outset of the covid pandemic, live alone in a rural setting on a wooded hilltop overlooking a beautiful lake. With most of my family gone now and no social connections I am feeling rather isolated. Reaching out to this online community of elders hoping to find and share in some pleasant and stimulating conversation. My favorite topics of discussion are philosophy, spirituality, religion, poetry, life in general, and oh yes, sailing. Thanks and best wishes to all

Hi you're very welcome here.. just remember the rules.. no personal attacks and no discussion about Politics and you'll be fine.. feel free to jump in on any discussion which takes your fancy...

Hey there, @sailormann ... and welcome! Your post made me remember something... greenest state in the land of the free... yes? You recognize ev'ry tree? 😊 But I sure hope you didn't play with b'ars when you were only three! 🐻 I suspect (really hope!) you recognize the reference? If not, I just made a really bad first impression. 🤭

Haha, thanks Kate. Yes I did get the reference. I am on a first name basis with every tree and know to keep a safe distance between myself and the larger furry things that dwell among them. Forgot to mention in my initial post that I am also quite fond of humor. Thanks for brightening up my day :giggle:

Thanks hollydolly. I believe everyone deserves respect, although I've never been one to condone rude behavior. As for politics, I'll leave that to those children trying to build a rainman out of snow 😉

Sailorman, who is your favorite poet?
Oh there have been so many over the years. At first, in the dark days of my youth when I was still trying to figure out the who is of I am it was Elliot and Poe, whom I still admire for their eloquence and economy of words. Then one day while perusing the shelves of my favorite book store, I came across a little paperback entitled Selected Poems by e.e.cummings. It was as if he was speaking directly to me with a voice so familiar that it seemed to come from inside me, from my very own heart. And echoes of gratitude began to resound within me... for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes!
Who is your favorite?

Do not care much for T.S. or Cummings. I know a lot about Poe, toured his home in Philadelphia once. Stood at his grave in Baltimore.

Favorite, the Great Emily Dickinson. I am also partial to Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Cummings is definitely different, challenging, and a bit like trying to solve a brain-teasing word puzzle. Out of all his nearly 3000 poems there are only a few dozen that I really like. Dickinson is beautiful. I shall have to look up Ella Wheeler Wilcox and see what she has to say. Somehow I missed her. Thanks for sharing that.

I seldom post on intro threads, but where you live sounds intriguing
I love the mountains
and have an off grid cabin up near Crater Lake

There's a Jeep under there

Once you get your bearing, please post some pics

And welcome
Oh wow, so much snow! We have an occasional heavy snow like that but it's rare. I'm intrigued by off-grid living and would like to learn more about it. I will post some pictures once I better understand how it works. Thanks and best regards. Stay warm and safe
