Sighting of spirits or...

Spooky story. I wonder if that facility is listed in your state's roster of most haunted places. I've heard of haunted correctional facilities before.

Back in the early '90s I saw an other worldly being while working in a vacated county jail. Some kind of spirit being, it looked female. It was a translucent white moving image, had some kind of clothing that looked like it was blowing in a breeze, yet there was no actual moving air. I could see it's face, which looked anguished. Well, I'm not one to scare easily, but it felt like I was injected with ice water, I turned and quickly left the area where I had seen the whitish aberration.
Myself and other employees encountered numerous other worldly beings at that facility. In later experiences I mostly heard sounds of metallic objects crashing(like metal office desks) in areas that did not have those objects. Or, the rattling of steel jail bars, the slamming of jail doors that couldn't be shut, because we had secured them in the open position with chain. We did that so that people that came into the jail while vacated wouldn't accidentally get locked in. We carried HTs(radios) but the building is solid concrete and steel, and radio transmissions were weak, or outright blocked by the physical structure.

It was the consensus of those staff members that experienced these events that the beings were souls of inmates that had died in the building, over the years.

A female deputy heard of my experiences at the jail and reached out to me, her interest was in a young woman who was in custody for drunk driving, and chose to hang herself (fearing her parent's wrath) while on her watch.

Nathan, I am too sensitive and chicken to work in a place like that. I lived in a 200 year old house that my husband grew up in upstate New York and it was haunted.

Two years later we sold it and moved back to Wisconsin. The new buyers had stories as did people that lived there before us. Eventually it burned down which was probably for the best. My son was 4 and saw a woman standing over the baby’s crib one night.

I believe this. I grew up in an historic neighborhood. George Washington slept everywhere nearby. Seriously. I used to see ghosts, shades, all the time in that neighborhood. It was nothing horrifying. They struck me as people who didn't know they had passed. That's all. There was nothing evil if you know what I mean. It seemed like confusion and I did not have any answers.

This isn’t an area I normally visit . I just wanted to comment on the ghost trivia. I’ve always referred to ghosts as just lost souls who don’t believe or understand they are dead yet. There’s no evil but they ‘are’ considered low vibrational spirits. Angels are considered high vibrational spirits. Us mortals are somewhere in between. That’s how I perceive it.

When I lived in that house I could feel the spirits and they weren’t evil. One time laying in bed awake I could feel my ear being pulled and looked at my husband and he was sleeping. Doors would open and close by themselves and the middle bedroom was so haunted no one wanted to sleep there including kids.

What this is bringing to mind for me goes back to the mid 80s, when I was living in a large older house in Vancouver. The house had been divided into a number of apartments, and I got to know four or five of the other people living there. One was a woman around 40 years old who was a licensed psychologist.

At some point she must've decided I was reasonably open-minded and interested in all sorts of things. She told me about having lived elsewhere in Vancouver, in a room on the second floor. Apparently, the houses in that neighborhood were quite close to one another. Through a window in her room, this woman could see across into a second-floor window of the next house. Sometimes an etherial figure of a quiet-mannered young girl would appear in that room.

Being a professional woman with a background in science and modern psychology, she resisted believing what she had thought she'd seen. But she became consumed by trying to figure the thing out. To the point that she ferreted out public records (newspaper articles, obituary notices, etc) relating to the house's street address. To her astonishment, she found confirming reports of the death of a young girl there from quite a few years previous.

Makes sense, i've had similar. But then those stories rarely get told in books or movies. So many people always expect dramatic if not scary.

Thanks for sharing this, @Nathan.

If i recall correctly A well known UK author (Chesterton?) Wrote a story once about how sometimes the living don't even realize they saw a spirit till after the fact.

One of the first ones we saw here in our 160+ yr old house was spotted thru a large window, walking up to front door. Our older dog Shotzi who had moved down here with us despite being to small to see out window. I opened the door surprised no-one there. Shotzi wanted out and ran as far as his tether would let him toward first one then other side of house, clearly wondering where the stranger went.

We later came to know this one as 'cowboy', his attire was that of a ranch hand. Looked to be in his teens. When we got my Pittie mix dog that fall, cowboy loved to play with him so much we had to ask him not to do it after dark when we were trying to relax from our day. He complied.

I'm inclined to go with "..or" in such matters, not that I'm wed to the conclusion that such things are impossible. Very little is out of the question but I don't conceive of people as having a corporeal component and a spiritual one so I'd be disinclined to consider the possibility in your shoes.

On the other hand I have some pretty wacko theories of my own. For instance I'm inclined to think that all consciousness is God's consciousness and that as creatures come into existence (or are created, if you like), God simply withdraws to allow them autonomy motivated by a desire for relationship. But I don't think God simply leaves us, our consciousness is really His' and we only borrow it and forget that we're not really alone in here. But we are ceded free will so long as we live. After that, I think everything gets recycled. I know, pretty whacky.

Not really. Fairly similar to my own (which some folks do think pretty wacky).

After my NDE I was convinced that not only are we all connected to Divine Consciousness but to each other thru our connection to the Divine Consciousness. But for me that does not preclude various types of 'haunts' because with/thru the Divine Consciousness many things are possible some think impossible.

I've always dismissed out of hand NDEs but that really long book I finally finished reading convinced me that where something doesn't fit my own take it is better to simply admit I don't know and if anything comes up to convince me, there'll be less back tracking to do. There was actually a section on NDE's which wasn't an argument in favor or against but basically making the case that there was some reason to consider at least. I could extract an excerpt off my Kindle if you'd be interested.

Am curious to see what they say.

I'll get on it. I've experienced consciousness differently with hallucinogens but nothing to do with a near death experience. Although I did have a save my own life experience on a skateboard which did not involve hallucinogens but it was an adrenaline fueled experience involving reliance on something more than I myself could possibly control.

Sorry but I've never really gotten used to navigating around the Kindle. The Matter With Things is the first thing I've read on a Kindle. It is thousands of pages long and the Kindle reports locations by number one time and by page number another .. Kindle pages I think.

I skimmed past the NDE mentions at the time so I didn't take any excerpts at the time and now it is very hard to locate them. I'll try again later.

It's ok over the years i've read so much pro and con i was just curious what more balanced view would look like. Thanks for trying.

Some conversation of this sort came up at a friend's house last week. A woman had invited my wife & me and another another couple, and we all know each other well. The other couple have had careers in the medical field, the woman being a radiologist & the man (Steve) being a paramedic and trained nurse, and he's still working.

Steve described some incidents that happened in one of the hospitals in the region, a building he has worked in a lot. The main portion of the building was built back in the 1930s, and isn't very large. But it has been upgraded and maintained, as well as having had other portions added on through the decades. Steve said he'd seen an apparition in a corridor of the old original portion. He wasn't convinced of anything at first, because he used to work an overnight shift & thought maybe he'd just been tired. But in talking with other medical staff there, it turned out there were people who said they'd had either an unsettling feeling being in that particular area or had themselves experienced sightings there.

Steve also described some other incidents he had experienced in this building, and those are a little too complicated for me to try to recap... I think I'd be unsure about getting certain details right. But it was interesting stuff to listen to. Steve said these experiences have left him more open-minded.

@OneEyedDiva , I've been looking for that newspaper story online, so far no luck. But, did come across an article about one of several Scared Straight episodes filmed at that jail. aetv.com/shows/beyond-scared-straight. Shown are some of my actual former co-workers escorting the juveniles.
I hired on as a building maintenance mechanic there at Central Detention Center in 1985. I know each and every square inch of that building, if I went back to visit today and was blindfolded I could find my way from one end to another. I shed a lot of blood, sweat & tears there, good times too. :giggle:

Nathan, I read your recent post, then went back to re-read your opening post. So I understood the building was around 20 or so years old during the period you & others were maintaining it. Your experience is sort of a myth buster. Goes to show buildings don't have to be too awfully old for these presences to be experienced in them.

There's a site I stumbled upon a couple of years ago, can't recall the name right now, but, it had to do w/hospital workers...mostly nurses who would see all kinds of things on their shift. This was mainly on the night and graveyard shifts.

ie: apparitions coming and going out of the hospital rooms, or glimpses of them in the halls.

I'll try to locate it..
This may be it---allnurses.com

I've sometimes wondered why there may be hauntings. I don't know what I believe really. But I've wondered about places where there were mass casualties. Plane crashes, 911, areas bombed during WWII. Concentration camps. I'd think those places would have ghosts left and right. I don't know.

Good news I found the discussion of NDE's in The Matter With Things, mostly centered around Kindle page 1670. But having used up my allotment for extraction quotes I will need to transcribe it the old fashioned way. But it is too late tonight. Soon!
