Driving blind at night?

I do not mean with a blind fold 🙈
No, driving through unfamiliar territory trying to get home.
Spent several hours at the beach then several hours at Bold Park, a Eucalypt woodland in the suburbs of Perth.
Driving home in the dark, in traffic, telling myself, Keep going north and every now and then east and I will arrive at my destination.
Done okay for the most part.
Only two wrong turns saw me come out 2 km's north of where I wanted to be. :)

you need a satnav....

I refuse to pay the subscription fees.

I just grab a Google offline map for my route and plug my phone into the car. Still get full turn-by-turn and voice control, maps and instructions come up on the screens.
Is Waze free? Maybe you can use that from your phone.

I have Waze on my phone.. but for the life of me I can't get the volume to turn up high enough so I can hear it. It's a shame because Waze warns you of speed cameras and hold ups... but I have to use Google Maps on the odd occasions I need a map because the volume is louder and clearer... but it doesn't warn me of anything ahead..

Waze is really good for the traffic jams. I just use the nav system but kids use Waze all the time.

You've done this probably but Settings, Sound, slide bar volume.

First, I'm too cheap to pay for a data plan. I only pay $100/year for prepaid service and even then I don't use it all and roll it over. Second, there are still places with no cell service, though I haven't been there for a while lately.

yes well most place have that when you're driving...
I just need to decide not to be so cheap and go with a regular "plan." I hate debt though, which is how traditional plans are structured. These days there are alternatives that bill month to month without cancellation charges.

I have managed quite well so far.:)
Too much reliance on technology will see major problems down the track.
I still use a street directory, drawing myself maps to my destination. :)
That night, I knew basically which way I needed to go, I just never recognised any landmarks in the dark.
It is very very rare I drive at night, especially in unfamiliar territory.

I rarely use a a sat nav.. because I have a very keen sense of direction, but on the rare occasions I'm likely to take the wrong road..especially in the dark from somewhere that's new to me, then I would always use it...

I love Waze. It takes a lot of the apprehension out of going places by myself. I have not driven at night in a long time. My vision has improved since I quit smoking so I need to try out a night trip some time soon and see if the night vision is better.
