Socrates triple filter for gossiping

Gossip is something which I am sure I have been guilty of at times in my life, although now I am of maturer years, I must say I do mind my own business mostly. I certainly wouldn't go out to hurt anyone. Yet we all hear things and perhaps can't help but pass them on sometimes.

I read today of the triple test of Socrates and I think it's worth remembering. It is to check whether what you are about to tell anyone is the truth, is it a good thing and is it useful?

It would save a lot of trouble if these filters were applied I think.

My grandfather used to say "Ask yourself . . . is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary?? If you can't honestly answer "yes" to at least two of the three, keep quiet. (y)

My across the street, very unfriendly neighbor and his wife weren't getting along. He threw her out of the house, and they separated. She moved in with her boyfriend. Big lawsuit over the house. All in one week, the neighbor "shot himself", - cops all over the place, she sold the house and moved to Calif. with the boyfriend. Did I gossip about this? Oh , hell, yeah.
