Did you enjoy some chemical treats & smoking in 60s & 70s?

From the law-enforcement perspective, I'm glad that cannabis has been legalized for adults in Canada. It's been left to each Canadian province to manage the regulation of it. In BC, it's legal for an adult to grow four plants at a time. But, I'd have to say that five years of legality has not been enough time to work out all kinks & issues involved with cannabis.

I was a hard-working farm boy through most of the 60s, and in the 70s I was a hard-working husband and father. I had very little exposure to chemical and natural substances, and then too many responsibilities to fool around with 'em.

I did start smoking cigarettes when I was 18. I was working at a lumber mill, and all but one of my co-workers smoked. Not that they're to blame; I just wanted to be one of the guys, I suppose.

I didn't drink alcohol til I was about 24, after I separated from my first wife. It was usually whiskey and a mixer, only on Friday and Saturday nights, and never at home...I had 3 little kids.

When my boys were in their early teens, and babysat their little sister while I went out to the only club in our little town, I got so drunk a few times, they had to help me into the house at like 2am. One time I had to call my 16yr-old son to come get me in my work truck (illegally; he wasn't licensed) because the bartender took my car keys. (bless your heart, Connie)

That's when I cut waaay back on the alcohol. I'd have just 1 or 2 drinks after the kids were in bed on Christmas Eve, when I had friends over for a barbecue, which wasn't often, and before bed after a really sucky day. And I didn't drink til I was drunk.

I did smoke weed with my oldest brother once, about 15 years ago. He grew it at home, hybridized. Three hits of that shyte and I melted into his couch and froze there for what seemed like an eternity. I did not enjoy that at all.

Years before, I smoked some with my baby sister when she was 19 and I was about 30. That was my 1st time. Bonnie and her 18mo-old baby were living with me, and I found her stash in my freezer one day and got really pissed-off at her. We had kids at home, and I had a decent job, and that shyte was illegal at the time.

I told her pot was bad for her, anyway, and she said I didn't know what I was talking about because I'd never smoked it. So, I challenged her assertion by smoking a joint with her.

Sure enough, while stoned, I forgot to feed the kids dinner and make sure they took their baths before bed. In fact, I missed their bedtime by about 3 hours. And I didn't even care.

Maybe I'm a lightweight when it comes to weed, idk. Doesn't matter; I don't use it.

I do still smoke cigarettes, though.

I studied and researched psychedelics prior to using them. I wish I had taken more LSD than what was availble to me. Pot made me sick in the head, a precurser to schizophrenia, I did not know it at the time. I just kept on smoking, thought I was supposed to feel this way.
MDA was my drug of choice, also psilocybin and mescaline. Finally, journeyed too far out to return the way I came in.

I stayed away from heroine for fear of addiction. If you could do things differently a second time around, how would you change history?

If I could go back to my former self, I would stand up against my father before he messed with my head.

LOL...he must have felt this way. :)

I was in high school during the late 60's. I did not smoke anything or take any drugs! I was in sports and did not want to risk getting caught. Where we lived you could drink 3/2 beer at 18, and I did.

I got married in the 70's and married a girl that also did none of it until she was legally old enough to drink! We do drink alcohol in moderation.

We are still together, raised three great kids, have 6 grandkids, and now one great-grand child. Life is good, never saw a need to take illegal drugs...none of our kids are excessive drinkers and none of them smoke cigarettes or any form of tobacco.

Everyone I knew who experimented with drugs in the 60s & 70s stopped after a few years. Yes, drugs were entertaining for a while, but it became time for us to put away childish things, and we knew getting stoned was a childish act.

"Pharma" drugs used to be the gold standard for pain relief. No more. So many of us HATE the side effects of vicodin/hydrocodone and similar meds and won't take them. I much prefer 1/4 of a gummie every 4 hours to a pharma pill on the rare occasions when I need pain relief - like for a bruised/cracked rib.

I probably did more drugs and drank more alcohol than most of you, it's not something I'm proud of. I walked away from that life when I was twenty two and have been thankful every day since.

Edit..but for some reason I never smoked cigarettes, that just seemed stupid. lol

I knew a man who did DNA tests to help doctors decide which medication to give a person based on genetic information. Genetically we are each more or less apt to get addicted to this or that. I suspect how we react to substances is related to the parents, especially the mother's use of the substances leaving some of us predisposed to some addictions like cigarettes.

Besides back in the day smoking was what cool people did and the movie industry supported that more than other drugs. I want you to know, I was totally cool with my greaser clothes and cigarettes.

Only alcohol for me. To this day never tried anything like weed. I've seen the damage drugs for recreation can cause. I've seen the death first hand. Plus, the was taught early on that it's evil. I just said no.

My stance on legalization is that it should all be available. The war on drugs has been won, and drugs were the victor. They're everywhere. I think we're beyond a tipping point where its illegality does nothing. User - in their millions - know it's illegal, they simply don't care. If a law has failed in its goal, it ought to be revisited.

When did you live in Hollywood? And whereabouts?

You think fentanyl, crack and meth should be legal? What about prescription drugs like oxy and morphine? Amphetamines? Weight loss meds? Antibiotics? Don't you think legalization would be a dangerous, slippery slope?
