How old are your spices?

I looked and found a few old bay leaves and ground mustard in the back with a little bit of red peppercorns and some white pepper. Everything else is still good.

Care to share what they are.

Well technically, spices AND herbs that I use every.single.day.
- Cayenne Pepper
- Red Pepper Flakes
- Chili Powder
- Ground Cumin
- Paprika
- Oregano Leaves
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
And bonus when in the mood or making a low country boil, Ground Thyme

I try very hard not to get crushed garlic on my hands. Did mosquitos stay away from you too. ?
I'm the guy that will pop a clove in my mouth and crunch... And don't have a big mosquito issue... nor vampires... nor girls at the beach..

I bought the wife a new 12 tray dehydrator for Christmas. 3 times the size of our old one thats been around over 25 years.

I can tell you like a bit of nip in your food.

Mine are not that old as I use them almost every day. The ones I don't use as often may be beyond the expiration date but as long as they still have flavor and fragrance I will use them. You can tell when they are not good any longer. I always buy the smallest sizes.

These are the spices we use mostly on the food we are cooking. It’s known as buffalo wing spices. We do chicken thighs and chicken legs with it too.

Lol! Funny!
Those dehydrators are nice but expensive.
What types of things do you use it for, if you don’t mind me asking?

I have a tin of smoked paprika manufactured in Spain... bought May 2015. There's no date on it, but I suppose it would have been dated at least two years past that. Well it could be worse! :sneaky:

I might have a couple of bottles that came over the silk road on a camel......anyway they have been around for a while. I don't cook with spices so I don't know if they are really bad or not.
If you don’t cook with them, you have no reason to worry.

It would be an extensive list.... Every year we have apples, figs and pears we dry out, put in mason jars with an O2 absorber. Peaches we just can. If bananas are found at a deal, the chip pile gets replenished. We make our own garlic, onion, scallion powders. Have garden boxes with a host of spices growing.
Then theres the multitudes of meats we play with, some get in the dehydrated after being smoke.

Wow. Thats fabulous. You have fruit trees too. You must be the 5th or 6th person I’ve met on this site who has fruit trees. Thats really special.

Banana or apple chips would be great to make. You make your own powders? That’s incredibly resourceful. We have 8 x 12 raised beds for herbs & veggies. They are fenced at the back to protect them from deer and other animals but also a place for beans to climb.

You must be really healthy. You smoke meat too. My husband would love talking to you about all the things that can be smoked.

I’m sincerely impressed when I discover people like you. Resourceful souls we hate to waste. That’s how the Mennonites and Amish live. As close to nature as possible.

Well I was very healthy right up to the crash.... DW was until too the Cancer diagnosis, been a rough year.
We have several different fruit trees, 4 different grapes, but live next to an 85-acre orchard. 7 different apples and 3 peach flavors. I'm on the depravation permit for the orchard and get plenty of venison. We always try to get the most use out of what we manage to gather... We can a lot of stuff... think we put up 30+qts of tomato sauce last fall. A smoked turkey for thanksgiving then made some sandwiches, then a big pot of soup that 3/4 got canned, the carcass was pressure cooked and several qts of broth canned for future use.
Ask your hubby if he wants a SPAM recipe.... Yes we make our own. some we can, some gets stuffed into casings and smoked...

We still have a bunch of McCormick's in metal containers...
But we make a bunch of our own stuff from the garden every year.... Last year I crushed about a lb of garlic and my hands smelled

Try washing your hands with dish washing liquid combined with a teaspoon of table salt to get rid of garlic odor.

My husband would LOVE a spam recipe. He’s a huge meat eater and guaranteed loves spam.

We use the carcass bones to make our own broth also. Broth is great for making soups with.

We also make tomato sauce from scratch. We probably have close to 30 bottles of it. Just the other day my husband made homemade baked beans. One lot made with fancy molasses , the other one made with black strap molasses. They are both good but I preferred the milder molasses. It didn’t smother the other subtle flavours of the beans etc. We do a lot of canning too.

He says he’d like a spam recipe if you have time.

I find these kinds of videos fascinating:

Spread a little of that on toast, sprinkle a few herbs, add a slice of cheese, broil just enough to melt it slightly. Mmm!

Too darned old, I was looking at them this morning thinking I need to get rid of them! Soon I hope!
Our son put together a bunch of spices and claims it scares bears away from garbage. We will see next spring.

When I see the price of spices, it makes me think twice about replacing the older ones. Even on sale, they’re well over $6.

I keep my spices in the refrigerator. Most of them I've replaced rather frequently. I have to check the chili powder though. I'm not sure how old that one is.
