My eyes went funny last night

I felt slight loss of peripheral vision left side and flashing coloured lights around both eyes. Like a kaleidoscope. It was scary.
I sat quiet for a short time and it went away. I went to bed early, slept well. Today I have a slight pressure headache around my eyes and feel tired.
I had been tired and stressed last night. I do have an ear condition called otosclerosis which had heralded with vertigo and tinnitus, both of which are controlled by Betahistine now.

Has anyone had these eye experiences?

I get visual/ocular migraines once in a while... it's exactly as you described. In fact, you may want to put that in the search box here because there have been a number of threads about it and I've always been surprised at the number of people who actually get them. "Migraine" is somewhat misleading because it's not really a "headache." You may get some comfort in reading what others have to say about theirs, Rose. Mine have been happening for at least 20 years.

EDIT: Rose, I'm going to edit here... your thread had me doing some medical journal reading today and it seems that ocular migraine generally happens with just one of the eyes... My oculars have those flashing/pulsating lights, but I see you said it was both eyes, so it really *would* be a good idea to have it checked.

It lasted about 20 minutes, I rested my eyes and had an early night and been ok since then except tired with a mild headache. So it is likely to be a migraine. If I have anything more I will seek medical attention.

That's around the average time mine last as well. Occasionally up to an hour. I have never discovered exactly what trigger mine... sometimes I realize that I had rubbed my eyes pretty hard earlier in the day. Sometimes it seems like heavy anxiety may trigger them. At least two times I was in a store and wondered if it was the fluorescent lights triggering it. Sometimes I do have a mild headache after them, but not always.

Rose, you should get to the ophthalmologist asap. Flashing lights is a sign serious sign. Don't wait. Best to make sure everything is good.
Well, I'm ok now and it would have to be a big emergency as it's the weekend. There were no other signs of stroke or anything.
The trouble is such signs are exactly those of a migraine.
I shall book an appointment with my optician on Monday.

If you've never experienced it before it is very scary suddenly losing part of your peripheral vision and seeing flashing kaleidoscopics all around. I used to get severe migraines minus the aura. Now I got just the aura and a mild headache. I thought a stroke was imminent!

Yes, I sure understand that. My dearest friend happened to be a physician and I'd known he'd been having them, too... so not as frightening as it may have been for me. I've never figured out a trigger but I *do* know that a few times I realized I'd been rubbing my eyes (probably too hard) the same day or the day before. So... maybe. Maybe stress. Not sure anyone knows.

You need to see a doctor ASAP. I'm especially concerned that the eye thing is combined with headache. I'd even go to an urgent care and see if they can get you in for a CT scan just to check for tumors, but I don't really know what it could be. But yeah, go to urgent care. Don't wait three months for a specialist.

If it's nothing but a migraine, then fine. But don't want for three months to figure that out.

No repeat, it must have been a migraine. It's life that something can be so very worrying one day and all is well after all. Our bodies have so much ability to heal.

It's just as I get older I am alarmed at how many things are going wrong and how much it worries me.

You are right that it is best to check things out. However, I only recently had full scans of my head due to the ear and vertigo symptoms. So I know no tumour is present. I've had eyes checked and all is well.

I still would not depend on the Internet or my own intuition to self-diagnose. When I was 30, ok, fine, I'll tell myself it's just a migraine. But as we get older, stuff can get real very quickly.

Also, as we age, it takes longer to recover from stuff. It's frustrating! I don't understand your thinking. Do you feel like you're bothering the doctors if you go talk to one about this? They are paid very well to be bothered!

The other way I feel about doctors is, "I didn't bother you much for the first 60 years of my life. I think I have earned the right to see you now, if that's OK?"
