Did my income tax yesterday....

I got all the info I needed to e-file my income tax so I got it done yesterday (with Free Tax USA).

My late husband and I had to do a lot of remodeling and repairs on this house and part of that ($80,000 expense) was all new windows, insulation, and exterior doors. That totaled around $23,000. Of that, I got a credit of $184. I shouldn't be ungrateful, but...holy cow! What a rip :(

Just wanted to vent.

Is it really "free" Free Tax USA? They didn't charge for anything?

Federal is free and state is $14.99. I paid $45 last year for state using Tax Act. State is never free filing :(

Free Tax USA went through all the questions like any other software to get you the max refund. I forgot to designate that hubby was deceased but when I printed out my return, it was already at the top of the return.

EDIT: See Gemma's comment below about OLT. State is $9.95. I didn't know about this before I filed :(

You might be interested to see how the Canadian Federal Government handles rebates for home owners who improve their homes insulation, windows doors and furnaces. Up to a five thousand dollar rebate is available, plus the Provinces also offer rebates for such improvements. Here is the link to the Federal Government program. link. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/home-renovation-green-energy-1.6041876

The above program is national in scope, right across Canada. Jimb.

That's amazing! I'm moving to Canada....haha. Seriously....I was expecting a much bigger credit because someone on here posted that there would be a 30% credit for energy efficient improvements. I feel insulted and cheated :(

Yuk. A reminder for this person too. After 7 years retirement living off just SS monthly benefits without any other incomes, given last year's COLA increase, I am now above the minimum income tax threshold. The IRS ought be raising senior SS thresholds with any COLA increases.

My 2003 taxable income will be $4623.00 . That took about 5 minutes to calculate based on my 2 Canadian Government pensions, minus the standard deductible amount of $14,398 that all Canadians get on their income tax return. In addition I have about $4500.00 in charity contributions for 2023 so CRA owes me some money. Every Canadian should file a CRA tax return, every year, to be sure to qualify for all of the programs that the Feds and the Provinces offer, even if they have no "taxable income ". Some examples are refunds of Provincial sales taxes, or deductions for having to buy "assistive devices " for seniors, or grants for home heating costs in the winter. Jimb.

There are some terrific grants available to those in need. Our province offers heat pumps as well as window repair or renew.
It’s worth looking into.

Received my refund this Tuesday and filed on February 5 and accepted by the IRS on the 6th.
Usually wait but was bored one night and decided to just do them.
Small refund, which is normal. Try to keep it as close to a 'draw' as possible.
Free to file this year (no state tax) just a simple return, so I'll take the refund and buy a nice bottle of Scotch.

Why did you expect to get a credit for new doors and windows?

We had all our windows replaced in 2020 to the tune of $22,000. I never knew there was any tax deduction associated with it so I never filed. Sounds like it wouldn't have been worth it anyway.

No, I think this is just a rip off. Unfortunately, this house needed to have those old, drafty windows replaced.
