..which will make it £18 per hour to park in the centre of Paris, and £12 ph in the rest of the city ..watch out coming to a city near you....

The prices will apply to vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes with a combustion engine or hybrid vehicles, and more than 2 tonnes for electric vehicles. The move will not apply to Paris residents’ parking.

Tony Renucci, director of the air quality campaign group Respire, said: “The result of the vote is a victory for Paris residents’ quality of life.” He added that Paris was sending a message that “the presence of these monsters on wheels was no longer desirable on our streets”.

Emmanuel Grégoire, Paris’s deputy mayor, posted on X as voting began: “Heavier, more dangerous, more polluting … SUVs are an environmental disaster.”

Last year, Paris held a similar vote on whether to ban rented electric scooters and subsequently became the first European capital to do so. The turnout for that vote – 103,000 people, about 7% of registered voters – was higher than for the vote on SUVs.

Under Hidalgo, Paris has for years raised pressure on drivers by increasing parking costs and gradually banning diesel vehicles, while expanding the bicycle lane network in the congested capital. The city has reduced the number of on-street parking spaces in order to make drivers use underground parking. There was a 71% rise in the use of bikes between the end of the Covid lockdowns and 2023, city hall said.

Paris’s deputy mayor in charge of transport, David Belliard, of the Green party, said about 10% of vehicles in Paris would be hit by the higher parking fees, which could bring in up to €35m for the city each year.

I'm only surprised they neglected to mention the traffic hazards of top-heavy view-blockers. The way they must slow to a crawl and waddle to make a turn without tipping over drives me bats. Winter ice? Fuggitaboutit.

July 26th - Aug. 11th for the Olympic Games.
I would have thought they would make this change before then but apparently not.

I didn't go to New York, Manhatten , Statue of Liberty in the early 70's because there was no parking excpept for deliveries and Limo's. I felt bad not visiting the lady of the lake but she was a mess then anyway.

I'm waiting to see how the first hurricane evacuation goes down
south, with all the folks who didn't charge their car !!!!

One of the perks of living in a rural community is the unlimited free parking. Tractors and 4X4s are "no extra charge". ;)
I live in a semi rural community but land is at such a premium we're charged for perking in most places, including hospitals ... the vast majority are charged for parking outside their own homes in towns and cities. Fortunately not here where I live yet

This demonstrates again that you can't expect good things from the Socialists and the Green Party. The same in my country.

The last time I was in Chicago, which was about 2012, we paid $18 an hour to park on Michigan Avenue. I thought that was outrageous.
I paid less in San Francisco, which everyone told me to watch out for their parking fees. They weren’t cheap, but they weren’t as high as Chicago.

Nathan’s right. You stop in the smaller boroughs or towns, there’s usually a lot of free parking around.

in London the parking charges have been outrageous for years, and now with the congestion charge, people outside of the city( that includes greater London)... just don't drive in any more... and so what they've gained in rip off charges they've lost in consumer spending...

That’s what happens when cities get greedy. I about had a stroke when I saw the prices in Chicago. I didn’t want to stay, but my wife wanted to walk the golden mile, the miracle Mike or whatever it’s called. Even the shopping isn’t affordable for anyone on a low income budget.

same same....

From my one day visit to Paris 20 years ago, there was no parking spaces anywhere. People were parking on the sidewalks, every inch of space had at least two small cars parked on it. I could see why having a big ol' SUV would cut down on what little parking space there is.

which is exactly the same here... and SUV 's are very popular but they do take up a lot of space where there's really very little available

I only wish that here in Canada they would use the same kind of intelligent thinking when it comes to those huge crew cab trucks that the city slickers seem to enjoy driving to the grocery stores. If one parks beside you, you will find that backing your car sure presents a challenge.

yes this is the problem many of us find here with those great big cab trucks, you just can't see to get out of a parking space if they park next to you...and as we say in the Uk most of these are used by mothers just taking there kids to school...why ???..especially since our fuel is extortionately expensive as is our insurance, and road tax... why do some people feel it's necessary to won one of these for it to sit on their drive most of the day..or worse sit on the road taken up the neighbours space as well
