Dogs are wonderful companions for us. There are so many lovely friendly harmless types you can get. I love dogs in general but not big dangerous ones. My own is a mixture, small and very loving.
the law in the Uk says that owners of American XL bully dogs must have their dogs muzzled and on lead when outside... those that don't comply will have their dogs put down...The dog with a muzzle on is kind of telling.
I worked with a woman who got a large muscular dog as a rescue from some people. The male dog was not neutered and if she took it for a walk in her not so great neighborhood, people approached her wanting to breed their dog with that male. She got the dog neutered after a few months and would just say 'sorry he's fixed' after that.
She said the only problem with the dog was if anyone broke in, the dog would just lick and slobber the thief, the dog was very good natured.
So why do people need a protection dog?
Ordinary people, even women, with no business premises or such that need guarding, are walking around with powerful dogs. Is it a form of inadequacy being made up for by owning a dog with a magnificent physique? Like small weak men owning big powerful cars. Certain breeds of dogs are a loaded gun. There is an unspoken wish for respect from everyone through spreading fear. I find that repulsive.
Do such people really want these dogs to tear another human being apart? A grandmother, a child?
True. In the UK we have no real self defence weapons.
Canada is similar to the UK. Worrying about defending myself is the last thing I think about when out walking or sitting at home. There are the very rare cases when something bad happens. I don’t live my life based on fear.Do you think that some people may feel this is their only option to defend themselves is to own a dog?
You have good valid points. The trouble is when so many people get dogs for protection but do not control and train them. The dogs are then misused and dangerous to innocent people. Even police dogs are dangerous despite the best training, they have been known to attack when they shouldn't.This is a thought after reading your post. Do you think that some people may feel this is their only option to defend themselves is to own a dog? Not just a pitbull, but any dog. You said there is no real self-defense weapons.
What is someone supposed to use to protect themselves, their family & home from the bad guys? I'm not familiar with U.K. law, so I don't know what options a law abiding citizen has against the thugs who would kill or maim them & theirs. Aren't they allowed to stand up for themselves against the criminal or do they have to allow themselves to be hurt or worse killed?
Is it really about someone who feels inadequate OR do they feel the system can't protect them & theirs should the need arise for protection? Some may worry they have no other means available to protect themselves against the thugs. Doesn't the everyday man, business owner or not, no longer have a right to protect themselves & those they love?
Now, thugs will be thugs & will do whatever to dogs to make them vicious for their own benefits & that is nothing short of animal abuse. But thugs don't care. However, to label all pitbull owners as thugs (among other things) & call their animals loaded weapons when they aren't vicious isn't fair. I've been around enough pitbulls to know they all aren't bad as you say or think.
many of the people who own these dogs, are not fearful... they are in fact those who wish to instill fear in other people ....Like you @Jules, I don't go around living in fear either out in public or at my home. I also don't fear coming in contact with people who are out walking their dog no matter what size/type it is.
With that being said, there are people who are fearful of things (not including dogs this time) they or someone close to them experienced, what may have taken place in their neighborhood or just listening to news reports of bad happenings all over the world. Depending on where they live, a dog may be their only option.
A dog doesn't need to be mean to be protective, he just needs to be able to bark & sell the proverbial wolf ticket.
My daughter is a dog trainer and groomer.. qualified..she had her own business in Spain for over 10 years with room for 46 dogs, who were in her care for anything up to 3 months in her boarding kennels . She had every type of dog you can imagine.. bad ones good ones, quiet ones, angry ones... Not one single dog attacked her...or her partner or staff... ( she no longer works as a dog trainer/groomer)In my opinion it's the owners fault, as in this new case from Rome.
Jogger Killed by Escaped Rottweilers in Rome's Manziana Park
Oh Lord!many of the people who own these dogs, are not fearful... they are in fact those who wish to instill fear in other people ....
In this country there is no requirement for anyone to have Home owners insurance, and the people who are unwilling to have these type of dogs muzzled or have trained them to be angry dogs.. are the type who are the least likely to have home owners insurance...
My daughter had both a Pitbull and a Cane Corso.. rescues. The Cane Corso was th one that I feared most.. and it had to be kept away from the other dogs.. The Pitbull was a good boy, but he was extremely powerful and with Jaws that could snap a thick branch in half... but he was nothing like these American XL Bully Dogs...
This is him...![]()

How awful. My daughter is adog trainer and groomer.. qualified..she had her own business in Spain for over 10 years with room for 46 dogs, who were in her care for anything up to 3 months in her boarding kennels . She had a life threatening fall caused by a Pitbull.. not because he went for her, but because she had him on lead, and he went for the our Doberman.. who was being walked by a member of staff, and caused him serious injuries.. As she had the lead wrapped around her hand, and she went to put him in a choke hold ( standard procedure).. because he was such a strong dog he pulled her over the cliff on her property and she landed 30 feet below on flint and shale.. causing 2 fingers on her right hand to be torn off, and her legs ( she was wearing shorts) to be shredded by the flint
There had been bad blood between those 2 dogs previously which meant that they always had to be kept separated but on this day the Staff member got it wrong and walked the Dobie at the wrong time..
My daughter was rushed to emergency... and her fingers were sewn back on by amazing Spanish doctors.. I'll not post the gory pictures...

It took 2 years for her hands to work properly again. and her legs to heal .. and to this day she can't fully use those fingers on her right hand and has serious arthritis in them...
She also had a battle on to save the Doberman's life because he'd had his chest ripped out.and sadly the Pitbull had to be PTS..

OTOH.. the only dogs that have ever attacked me have been Rottweillers... they have real issues...
Cane Corso... !...they're on the Dangerous Dogs' list but not banned. They are Very large ... VERY strong , super independent and wilful dogs, and they could tear you apart like a bear... in the wrong hands they are absolutely potentially the worst dog..Oh Lord!
Corn Corso are the next big thing apparently.
I understand that & agree. As I said before, thugs will do whatever they want since they don't care. Some will use the dogs for intimidation or find other ways to intimidate. It's going to take the authorities to do something about it in all cases, but that's another topic for another thread.many of the people who own these dogs, are not fearful... they are in fact those who wish to instill fear in other people ....
well they're doing what they can here in that they've banned the XL bully dogs from being in public without being muzzled, and they did try and ban the breed and of course the bleeding heart XL bully owners whose dogs have never attacked were up in arms.. as you can imagine, so the govt backed down and just made the muzzle a permanent law.I understand that & agree. On the contrary. UK residents can and DO own rifles and shotguns, provided they go through the required legal steps to become licensed fire arms owners. Furthermore, a cricket bat or a baseball bat is quite legal to own in the UK. A walking stick is a legal thing to have with you in any public space, in the UK. Your blanket statement was not well thought out, or you don't have a basic understanding of the laws in your own country.True. In the UK we have no real self defence weapons.
all true...except almost everyone who has used their guns on their attackers has had a prison sentence...On the contrary. We certainly do not own guns, nor any offensive weapons as lawful citizens. Only criminals or armed police do.On the contrary. Yes indeed.Cane Corso... !...they're on the Dangerous Dogs' list but not banned. They are Very large ... VERY strong , super independent and wilful dogs, and they could tear you apart like a bear... in the wrong hands they are absolutely potentially the worst dog..
wrong some of us do own guns... we have licences issued by the police, but they're to use only for shooting game or on the gun range...We certainly do not own guns, nor any offensive weapons as lawful citizens. Only criminals or armed police do.
Once again, you show how unaware you are, of the facts in your own country. READ THIS LINK, that shows that about 5 percent of the population of the United Kingdom OWNS either a shot gun or a rifle. We certainly do not own guns, nor any offensive weapons as lawful citizens. Only criminals or armed police do.
