Were you ever caned at school?

I was slapped. My girlfriends were too. Corporal punishment was frowned upon in public schools which I loved but my parents sent me to a parochial school where punishment was almost encouraged. That place scarred me for life and I dislike talking about the nuns and their abuses even now.
The same in Germany. There were very evil nuns and priests who gave children a severe caning. Some of the bishoprics even delay the investigations on this topic.

In grade 2, there were a few people who enjoyed picking on me. During recess one of them started hassling me so I pushed him down. The school watch narc ratted me out and I was told to go to the principles’ office for a belting. When I got there , the principle was all ready to punish me . Instead he treated me with kindness. He sat and talked with me. When I went back to my class smiling, everyone wondered why.

In Jr. and Sr. high school the gym teachers and boy's vice principals had wooden paddles they could hit you with.

When I was in 5th & 6th grade in parochial school the teachers and principal all had big wide leather straps they could beat you with.

What I learned: you can't instill respect in someone by beating them....quite the opposite.

We were paddled, got my first three school swats in third grade for throwing a kids lunch in the toilet. I couldn't tell you how many times I was swatted after that but it was plenty, even our bus drivers would paddle us.

Those swats didn't totally fix my unrulyness but they sure were a deterrent, yet sometimes I just couldn't stop myself from being bad.

The grade school where I grew up left all discipline to the school Principal. It was always a man. Behind his desk hanging on the wall was a wooden paddle. It was around two feet long with a handle cut on one end. It was 3 to 4 inches wide and was painted completely black. In the center was a painted human eye. It was known as the Black Lady! It was only used on boys, and we all feared it.

If a teacher sent you to the dreaded "Principals" office, you were at risk of meeting the Black Lady! I only got sent to the office once and I did not get the lady, but I was warned, next time would be different. I never was sent to the office again. Except one time I got into a bit of a fight with a guy in class. We both were sent to the office to see the principal. I had no idea what was going to happen...

As soon as we were called into the office and explained to the principal what we had done, he proceeded to get the 'Lady' off the wall. He laid the paddle on the front of his desk, right in front of us and then he slowly walked around his desk standing behind us. He told us to stand up and move our chairs against the back wall. He then explained that since we both wanted to fight so bad, he was going to let us take turns paddling each other with the Lady. But he advised us if we did not "hit hard enough, then he would give a swat to the boy who failed to hit hard."

I was perplexed! I no longer wanted to fight, and I could tell the other guy felt the same. The last thing I want to do was hit him with the Lady! I was ordered to pick up the paddle and the other guy had to bend over a bit and put his hands on the desk. I was then told to let him have one.
I was crying pretty good by now as was the other guy. I tried to give him a swat that looked hard, but it was not. The principal promptly had me grab the desk and he gave me a 'good one', explaining that's what he expected. He told me to stay on the desk as now the other guy gets a shot at you. Now I'm thinking, my rear is already on fire and this clown has to hit me. I'm thinking he is going to blast me to avoid being hit by the principal. But he didn't, he hit me lightly, and then of course, he got a good one from the principal.

Thankfully, the principle ended the punishment, reminding us that fighting in school or on the school grounds is not allowed. He advised us if either of us had another fight anywhere near that school....it would be much worse. I never again had a fight anywhere near that school...

When my wife was in parochial grade school, there was a nun that repeatedly would bang on particular student's head on his desk as hard as she could. The boy in question was a very nice, but slow boy. I'm sure the repeated head trauma really helped with that. At the time nothing was ever done about that, that she knew of.

Fast forward about 20 years later, same nun is on the national news. Now in California, and under arrest for physically assaulting her students.

There was only one teacher when I went to school that had (and used) a paddle, I had that teacher in 4th grade and again for one subject in junior-high. She never hit me, though that teacher made me stick out my tongue for an hour after a snitch told her I'd stuck my tongue out at her behind her back (that was in 4th grade).

They had 'the strap' at my junior school, but I never got it.

Mom phoned the principal and told him she would handle the discipline...and if he ever touched my child that would be the end of his career. lol!

Yes our math teacher in particular aimed the tawse at the little pinkie edge of the hand
That hurt worse than the palm.
We girls would get it for giggling or some other stuff like bangin our desk lid, but others got it for failing short mental math tests etc.
Looking back I would say he was a monster..!!

I have stories but the punishment was never physical. Some teachers liked to mess with our heads. Once in junior high when a friend and I skipped school to go shopping the principal spread the rumor that we were in the woods with boys. What a jerk.

We didn't have corporal punishment in my schools growing up.
When we moved to NC my children's school had corporal punishment but parents had to sign a permission waver.
I did not. I told them if one of my children ever did anything to deserve that to call me. I would deal with it.
I never got a call about any of the three.
They don't have that anymore, I've been told.

Our head of Maths carried the belt ( Tawse ) over his shoulder under his jacket.. so we never knew when he was just going to pull it out fast and swipe us across the body with it. He'd do it for the smallest infraction like not having a pencil..

None of the California K12 schools I attended allowed corporal punishment. Historically without oversight it has proven to be an abusive process because individuals administering punishment often are emotionally angry with those they punish and generally ignorant of human psychology and behavior. Same issue with parents using physical punishment with their children. It is not as black or white either way as often debated.

I've mentioned on this board how I am fine with a societal change to limited adult corporal punishment as in "uncomfortableness and unpleasantness" given oversight versus expensive long term incarceration with rehabilitation that has proven to not be effective for a significant percentage of sentenced offenders. And likewise would consider doing likewise as a way to control some habitually disruptive school children without actual physical pain. In other words, making punishment negative enough so guilty won't want to repeat offenses and rather change and rehabilitate themselves.

Jr High ... Coach McGee made himself a paddle in the schools wood shop
A fine, long, thick, hard wood paddle that 6'5" Coach McGee also drilled holes through
Included was a leather thong to keep the handle attached to Coach McGee's wrist
That paddle even had a nickname although I've long forgotten the name now

It was a right of passage to "get it". I only "got it" once. That was enough. Thanks coach

Side note: Coach McGee's wife was a teacher too. Had her for sixth grade.
We were the second class Ms McGee had ever taught. She tried hard and sixth grade was a fun year.
There was even a party at the McGee's house at the end of the school year for the class.
That was where I first met Coach McGee and he gave all us boys fair warning to "stay in line".
... and had us drop and do pushups just because.

Good times

At least in this case some sort of justice was achieved.

I was in History Class & a bored 11 year old can be creative. The drone of the Lady Teacher was painful. So, I looks at the forced air heat registers along the wall and starts flipping lil whirly paper birds at them. they respond whirly bird all over the ceiling of the classroom. So, I spent a week at the Vice Principal office boring I tell you is nothing to the principal's office. He asked me why I did it and I told him the truth.
He said I have to keep you out of trouble for a bit. It seemed like all winter.

Some teachers can just be awful. Lesson learned; Junior high was a different school. Classes more fun, girls pretty tool. Old Hag gone.

We had another thread on this some time ago and now I remember our math teachers had the same name... Mr Smith.
My Mr Smith was probably late twenties early thirties so if yours was in late middle age and bearing in mind we grew up in similar area could be the same monster.

that's right...Mr Smith Head of Maths... it's hard to put an age on a teacher when you're a kid. In my mind he would have been about 50 or more.. he was a big broad guy... but he could have been younger..
