I had to stop taking it because it caused me to have blurry vision. I've had enough visual issues that I didn't want to play with that, but I will mention it to my glaucoma specialist when I see her next week. My doctor and I were so hopeful too, because Farxiga is known to aid in weight loss, prevent renal failure from progressing and keep people with certain heart conditions out of the hospital. I was shocked when I got on the scale and saw that I had lost an additional 6.5 pounds after losing the first 2 in a few days.

When my doctor called in response to a message I left, he agreed that I should stop taking the medication. He stressed that he values listening to me (and other patients) more than relying that the known side effects listed on the packaging. They will not be the same for everybody. He was pleased that I started my exercise plan about 9 days ago and intend to continue with that. I also told him I am modifying my diet to help with the weight loss. He said that can be as valuable as taking the medication. He had taken me off Nateglinide when he prescribed Farxiga. Nateglinide increases hunger and adds to weight gain. So I told him I'd rather manage on my own than take that again.

A couple of years ago, I had lost 26 pounds but gained 14 back. So I'm glad to have gotten this head start, which in essence is inspiration, to continue losing.

Weight loss as a side effect?
How awesome. I take medicine which increases appetite and has a side effect of gaining weight, which I have. Unfortunately I really enjoy eating

Blurry vision is a more serious side effect. It’s good that your doctor listens to you. I hope you get iit worked out.

Patty, I asked my glaucoma specialist and she said Farxiga would not cause permanent damage...it's just a side effect. I tried going it on my own, but it's hard. I started taking Farxiga again 4 days ago; something just told me to try it again. It was my intent to only take it until I lost about 5 more pounds but so far, I'm not having blurry vision like before. I'll see what happens when I've been taking it for a week.

My PCP had told me that Nateglinide, which I was taking, caused weight gain. He took me off it and the timing was perfect. I was just about to run out and when I asked for a renewal, he said to stop taking it and that's when he gave me the Farxiga samples.

@Pepper My doctor and nutritionist both told me of the renal health benefits of Farxiga. It also helps keep certain patients with heart ailments, such as my congestive heart disorder, out of the hospital. That's why my doctor was so gung ho for me to take it.

That’s great that you got the ok you needed.
Your healthcare seems excellent
Good stuff. It’s good to have medical health practitioners you can trust

I don't know how I got to be so blessed Patty, but I have wonderful doctors. My PCP, who has been my doctor for almost 30 years and I have actually become friends over the decades. I was so impressed with his bedside manner the first time he saw my mom in the hospital. Her surgeon had forgotten to get the clearance he told us he would get from her doctor, so he called in the doctor he shared an office with and the rest is history.

He's a musician too and has a Clavinova like me. He never spends less than 45 minutes with me, albeit about 5 minutes or so are to catch up on our musical endeavors, children and grandchildren. He often spends one hour, explains everything thoroughly and even draws or presents diagrams sometimes. He loves that he can speak medical speak with me and I understand. He also respects my opinion when I have reservations about trying a new therapy.

My podiatrist and GYN are wonderful too! Each of them incorporate full body health into their treatment plans. My glaucoma specialist is also wonderful. Despite my son's trepidation about having a visual field test done (because he doesn't trust the accuracy), she didn't let him get away with it...saying if he lost his sight, she'd feel responsible. She explained why the test is important and what it detects that he was not aware of.

So on our next visit in March...he will have the test done. She's also been my doctor for a couple of decades and I credit her with saving my vision. Two other specialists got my diagnosis wrong. My doctors are warm, caring doctors and we even greet each other with hugs. I like my two new cardiologists too.
