National Guard Deployed To N.Y.C. Subways

I hope the NY National Guard are NOT going to be issued ammunition. Remember Kent State ? The NG are NOT trained in law enforcement duties. They could be sent on patrol WITH NYPD officers, to patrol the subways in groups of ten. 750 is not a lot of bodies, in a city with 8 million people, is it ? Jimb.
Maybe it is just for Manhattan subways now??

Well, when the DA refuses to prosecute and even if an accused criminal is let out almost immediately with no bail, is it any wonder crime is up? Chuck in a few thousand unemployed And uneducated migrants, and chaos ensues.

I heard about this. I'm really sorry it has become that bad.

It's been over 30 years since I rode BART (bay area rapid transit) in the San Francisco bay area. I'd have no idea how it is today but I'd probably skip it.
We used to go to San Francisco once a year because it was so close and always rode BART. We never had any problems.

The latest information is that the NY National Guard members will be present at NY Subway stations, to search the back packs, and other pieces of luggage before people are allowed to get on the platforms. The NY Governor has said that " People don't have to agree to having their items searched, BUT if they don't agree, they won't get on the trains, either ". This should reduce the number of fare jumpers, at least. In my opinion, this is just a public relations "feel good " program.

For those that don't know, the City of New York has upwards of one hundred thousand Police officers, who work for more that 10 different law enforcement agencies. The largest is the NYPD, with about 40,000 officers, plus the NY Transit Police, the NY Housing Police, The NY Port Police, the NY State Police, the ATF, the DEA, the FBI, the US Marshall's Service, the Secret Service, the Federal Protective Service Police. Obviously not all of those law enforcement agencies work in uniforms, or do street patrols. JimB.

It's a bad look for NY and NYC. There were more subtle and effective ways to achieve their target w/out the resorting to the grandstanding and parading of camo and rifles for the world to see and only presume it's chaos resulting in less tourism, less office workers, and fewer residents.

I thought the military in the US couldn't perform law enforcement duties. I would ask why not just order in the state police and ask for other departments to allow their officers to come into NYC for overtime. Also these bag checks are basically dressed up stop and frisk which doesn't go over well in urban areas.

I hear and see alot of crime stories from NYC including less than 50 people account for over one thousand crimes or something? And mentally ill as mentioned up thread. Alot of legal pot possession apparently has created many unlicensed dealers selling some pretty strong stuff if not stolen from legal shops. And juveniles are as brazen and callous as ever Laws, criteria for arrest and prosecution change over time so one has to alway put statistics in context.

Right now I see a show for the subway riders. They already have photo op pictures circulating.
The National Guard is a branch of the military that belongs to a state. It has both state and federal responsibilities, but its state is its first priority.

There is also something called the State Guard which is just state oriented. I don’t think they can be used by the Feds for anything. Not all states have a State Guard.

Apparently, fewer tourists, office workers, and residents is the very reason the camos are there. The idea is to prevent murders. The police mainly investigate those after they happen.

I saw that this last weekend there were several "mass shootings". It seems like this is regular now. Maybe it IS getting to the point of needing the the National Guards presence in public to send the message of "order" in a time of "chaos". Immigration problems are happening all over the country also. Are things spinning out of control? Should we step in now, before it gets worse? Our troops are trained as peace keepers. Our streets/public is not very safe. Maybe I would feel better with armed security forces patrolling our public. Very weird to imagine that!
Remember when the red beret guys used to patrol the subway? I forgot what they were called. Their leader was named Curtis, I think. I don't what their backgrounds were. Of course back then, things weren't as bad as they are now. I rode the subway to get to Jazzmobile, where I took classes, when I was in my 20s. I would never do it now. In fact, someone hipped me to a better way to get there taking the bus over the GWB.

Does crime happen in all subways? Duh, yeah. But when you analyze the odds out of billions of rides, it's pretty low.
Tell that to the people who are being mugged, stabbed, shot and pushed onto the tracks. Seems like violence has escalated with more people being seriously injured.

@Pepper Is is mostly mentally ill or thugs with premeditated intent to do no good?

Most recent...a man was shot in the head on a NYC subway train. Passengers were ducking for cover. The man survived and was taken to a hospital. Apparently the man who was shot started out as the aggressor and was shot with his own gun. Video included.
NYC straphanger shoots ‘aggressive’ rider in head after wrestling gun away from him during fight: cops
2nd violent incident in less than a week since the NG and state police deployed to 'help'. Spontaneous violence is hard to stop. Especially once car is in motion.

We used the subway system in NYC a lot when we were younger. Now that we are seniors, we do not feel safe using it. We used taxis the last time we were there.
It is not just reserve to NYC. As a senior, I would not venture myself to take the subway in Paris or Brussels either.
Our subway ( Tube) in London is relatively safe and much cleaner compared to the stories we hear from New York.... and the subway ( called subway ) in Scotland is as safe as any other type of public transport...

The governor has made the subway and NYC into a "war zone" amplifying the situation w the addition of NY NG and NY State Police. It's only been a week but now 2 serious incidents have not been prevented by camo, (guess they're not psychic either) so we're do we go from here? Does she add 1000's more NG and state police so they're is an officer in every car, 24/7?

This situation would have been better addressed w a greater NYPD presence, which would not have fanned the flames of fear, and it won't seem like the subway system is unprotected when there is no longer camo and NYS police involved. IMO so far it's been a public relation disaster, in fact more of a publicity stunt, and only instilled more fear, not less. It was dumb, poorly thought out, and probably costing NYS much more than it should. The NYPD could have provided fully integrated and better coverage at lower cost. Not to mention we have 1000 people away from home, their families, and jobs most of whom probably hate NYC anyway.

Here are 6 officers in the subway. For those of you that haven't been able to visit NYC the officers in grey are NYSP. Their normal role is handing out tickets on the highways. The 2 in camo are weekend military warriors w various duties, they serve 2 weeks a year unless they're called out for state emergencies or called upon by the feds to support military operations around the world. You might not be able to see the camo uniforms since they're now wearing urban camo. Those in blue are NYPD. They work in NYC, know the system, and depths of depravity some can reach and are far better trained for the role of an urban policeman.

Edited to add: Does everyone realize how bad a job Mayor Adams has done yet?

Sliwa - smh.
