What would you say is the most reliable and cost efficient apparatus in your home?

I find it interesting about the size of some of the appliances in the UK. Some of the fridges here are big enough to hang a dressed out beef in. Now I am not sure about freezers. Here we also have very large chest freezers here. We had one of those growing up. There were four kids in the family and we did buy a half cow, chickens and pork from ranchers back in the day. We also froze a lot of veggie and fruit that was grown in our garden.

I have been watching a show on Amazon prime called Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlords. So I have been very interested in the housing in the UK, showing appliances, living spaces etc. One thing I have never seen here is the kitchen sink with the stainless steel draining area on one side. I would love to have that.

It has really opened my eyes to the housing problems in your country. I know we have it as well but I have never scene those conditions on a documentary in the US. I also was surprised to see the number of illegal immigrants you have.
We have that problem but I can see how they come across the border here.

The UK being an island, how do these immigrants make their way to the UK. You seem to have many from eastern Europe, Africa and the Asian countries. They must put a real financial problem on your government. The citizens of your country are really suffering with much worse inflation in all areas. The demand for decent affordable housing is heartbreaking. Sorry, I did not mean to take your thread but my eyes have been opened to so much I did not understand.

Maybe you could start another thread, open to all our UK members to share the true horror your people are being subjected to. In my mind I always romanticised England as a beautiful place. I really never got the shear number of people and suffering.
I have never watched that show altho' I'm aware of it so I don't know what areas you were watching or what type of conditions the housing was in...but I'm sure the production teams would have found the most disgusting because it makes good tv...

Fridges Can be HUGE here and are commonly referred to as American fridges for that reason... double doors etc.. since open plan living has become popular in recent years there's more space for larger appliances. What we don't have here generally speaking is Utility rooms.. so on the whole our Kitchen appliances are all in the Kitchen so they have to be by default quite small compared to American.. but that goes for all of Europe with regard the size of appliances..

In Spain I have a utility room at my house but it's only big enough to hold the washer and the separate dryer.. and the vacuum cleaner...

here in this house I have no utility room, so my kitchen has all the appliances in it.. altho' my dryer is behind the cabinet door so it can't be seen.. but the washer like most in the Uk is in full view.. and in the kitchen my larder fridge freezer is there too.. Outside I have a Brick shed, and a Barn.. in both of those I have a chest freezer and a tall larder freezer..

This is my fairly small kitchen...

i's important to bear in mind that there's a huge variety of different style housing in the UK...some tiny , some cramped.. some cramped some Huge and luxurious..

As for our Horrendous illegal immigrant problem who all arrive here by boat or smuggled on trucks on to boats from the continent .. best left unsaid because we'd be going into HUGE political territory...

..as for not finding anything as bad in the uSA...I found this immediately just by googling...

When my mother passed away and I had to clean out her house I was very surprised to see on the back of her fridge the year she bought it - 1953 it was a Kelvinator and it had never been repaired. I gave it to a refrigerator repair man in the next street and he said they were the best ones made ever. He said because they were a sealed unit, they never broke down. It was 42 years old.

Breville counter top oven. It is perfectly adequate for many small baking jobs that would otherwise require a much larger traditional stove, and a lot more electricity. BTW, I would also go with another poster who named a floor standing fan in place of an air conditioner. We do the same, and in our climate works like a charm.

I know we have it here, I just have not seen it other than on a show called Hoarders. Things are more horrible than the picture you have shown, much worse, stuff, filth, trash stacked to ceilings. Of course, these people are mentally ill, traumatized by some horrible event that made them sick.

That explains how they get there. I just wondered, I don't do polictics and I mean at all. I have never even voted in any election, state or federal. I know I should but since I really don't follow or discuss it with anyone I don't have any business voting. I left that up to the hubs.

One is our Kenmore fridge, with side-by-side refrigerator & freezer. Another is my cordless Makita professional-grade drill (1/2" bit capacity), which I use for shop & home-handyman tasks. šŸ‘
that reminds me I have my Black & decker electric drill ( not cordless ) which was bought for me the Christmas I was 35... so I've had it over 30 years and it's been used many many times... I can hardly believe it's been over 30 years... so sad time goes so fast, seems like yesterday

Sorry, had to stop and eat dinner so I could take my meds. I love your kitchen, so bright and cheery, all those windows. I love butcher block counters. I don't have them here. Would you please send me that sink, that is perfection, I want that drain board built in. It is much like mine, it is a galley kitchen style, plenty of cabinets but I like yours better. My breakfast area is at the end of the room, there is a big double window but it faces north. At the other end is a door into the formal dining which never gets used. Thanks for sharing!!

Well, at the moment, it's the screen door to the back porch

When we plop into bed, we open the back door and window by our bed
Great cross breeze
Zero cost
Very reliable (I made it)

This is a little dark, but you get the picture (maybe)

Definitely my Clairol lighted make up mirror. This mirror is at least 35 years old!
I have used it at least once a day during that time. It has moved once, and I've taken good care of it.
The light on the left is just now being a bit intermittent. Since its old it the lights can probably be replaced. I hope so.
It would be hard to find one this tough.

Right after WWII when millions of people were buying and furnishing houses many of the major appliances advertised a "lifetime guarantee." Our generation has been stuck with "planned obsolescence" and should expect to replace whatever we buy today within two to four years. :(

My most reliable appliance is a Moulinex food processor made in Canada and I have
had it for forty years. Back then things were made to last and not end up in a landfill
in two or three years.
