High Teck is New to me

Since moving in with family members I feel like an alien on a foreign planet. I lived in my own home for 30 yeas and had a clock in every room, a calendar in the kitchen and a directory next to the landline phone. Suddenly I have no clocks, no calendars or directory to find a business or doctor if I need one. I went to the store and asked to buy a map so I could get around my new location without getting lost. The clerk didn't seem to know what I was talking about. He wanted to show me tourist booklets of sites to see.

I do have a cell phone but I never use it. It is only kept in case I have an emergency and need to call 911. Well, my daughter is getting me a nice I-phone and will teach me how to use it. It arrives this week. I don't think I can use it to find a doctor or electrician unless I happen to know the person's name.

when you get your iphone , ask your daughter to show you how to find a doctor, and and put it into your contacts (phone book ) ..the same with anything else you need. On your Iphone will also be a calender, and a clock...

Yes, I know. That's why there aren't any of those things in the house. It will also have a map and everything else that I need.

I hope you will learn to adapt well to your new situation & surroundings. Can you keep a calendar in your room, and perhaps purchase a new directory? You may be able to download a map to print out, or ask your daughter to do it for you.

All the best to you, in your new situation.

Please do embrace technology, and have your family members help you.

I use Google Maps on my iPhone to get to any place I'm not familiar with. I can even go into Google and search for a specific place or enter a doctor's name and when I click on it I will get directions. It can make your life so much easier. And a big plus is that you will be learning something new and that can keep your mind alert.

I do still have a paper calendar as well, but it is printed off my Google calendar where I can type in the appointments/events rather than write them.

Now that you mention it, I can't remember I saw a map for sale in the store or even a gas station. Don't fret it too much and don't get too anxious. Just learn slowly and what you wish to know and you will be fine. I embrace the technology but I understand those who do not. And welcome to Arizona. I hope you enjoyed the cold day today (cold to me anyway). It will be 110 here before you know it so best to enjoy each nice day in the next couple of months.

Although I use the gps on my iPhone to direct me to places I don’t know where they are I still like having a paper calendar and keeping track of my appointments on it versus my phone. I find it more convenient.

I don't have a smart phone, just a flip phone and my laptop.

But you can find everything you want. Just put what you are looking for and the town and state you live in. Also Google maps. It will even show you the building so you have a visual if you are going someplace for the first time. I've resisted getting the phone because I'm not in contact with people and the flip phone is fine for emergencies, but some day I might.

And if you want a regular clock, by all means get one for your room. I still work part time so I have an alarm clock.

It seems that you are in good hands, smilingmore, but if
you have any other questions, you can ask them here, we
will look after you.

Are you connecting to Senior Forums via laptop? If so, finding what's in the area is as easy as googling what you need... not only will doctors be listed, but patient reviews as well. There's a site called Next Door where recommendations are given for local services also often with reviews from people in your area. You can easily find a map of your area on your computer, too... just have someone print it out for you. Since your phone is only for emergencies, I'm assuming you're talking to us from a desktop or laptop... all the information you need is right there and as easy to find as this forum was. Good luck with finding everything you need!

@smilingmore , I use a smart phone however, I still have clocks around the house. They're on the coffeemaker, stove, microwave. I have an old Timex alarm clock next to my bed with battery backup. My daughter buys me a lovely calendar every year that has a place in the kitchen. I have appts in my phone but also on the calendar that I can see at a glance.
I keep maps in my car. You can still buy them and most rest stops have free calendars of their state.
I don't depend entirely on my smart phone or computers. They may not always be available.
Keep smiling!

Once you get your iPhone, you will be able to find out just about everything you need to know, including what doctors are in your area, as well as ratings and reviews for them. You will not need a calendar, clock, calculator, paper maps or directory. All of that will be at your fingertips, literally. It will take time for you and patience from your daughter to learn all of the phone's features, but once you do, you won't believe the convenience. You'll also be able to speak into the phone and ask for the information you want. Most times, you will get it. Congratulations on getting an iPhone. 🎉🎉Apparently your daughter wants the best for you so ask her about getting an excellent protective case, but don't leave it sitting in there. :)

Having tech doesn't mean you can't have those other things, they're not mutually exclusive. Buy yourself some nice clocks, I'm sure they won't mind. While you're at it, get a calendar and a map too. The phone is simply a tool, and the best tool to use is that one that works for you.

I don't have an iPhone (too expensive) but a smartphone with Android. Nevertheless, I use it only some hours of the day and never for phone calls. And I have phone books at home too for searching doctors and so on. I won't become dependent of such a silly small device.

we no longer get phone books here in the UK...we used to get Blue pages ( private numbers of landlines for the whole country).. and yellow pages...

We don't get them any longer

Go to the 99 Store and get a paper calendar. You can also find wall clocks at Target, sometimes at the $1 store, at Big Lots, Walmart.

Don't think your SmartPhone will solve all of these issues for you. When the battery dies, what time is it, right? Have a wall clock or watch to inform you.

If it gets lost or stolen when is your Dr.'s appointment? Look at your paper calendar.

There is NOTHING wrong with the old ways.

Thank you. I didn't know I could buy a directory.
