Cowboy Heros

I can't recall but seeing John Wayne in so many military movies, which of the military services did he actually serve in? He was in so many WWII movies but would have been too young for that period.

I thought The Lone Ranger and Tonto were so cool. I liked Clayton Moore's voice. And I thought Roy Rogers was very cute.
I rarely missed a Lone Ranger episode on the radio. We didn't have a TV until, I think, the early 50's and by then I had my drivers license and would be "out and about" when his show was playing. On radio I think it was on at 7:30 PM.

"Early syndicated Western that was one of the first television shows to be filmed in color. Based on characters created by O. Henry, the series dealt with the adventures of the Robin Hood like bandit, the Cisco Kid, and his sidekick, Pancho. Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carillo played Cisco and Pancho respectively."

Ireland’s Forgotten Cowboys

"Ask any dude ranch greenhorn who has seldom forked a saddle where the American cattle drive originated and he will shyly mumble something about Texas longhorns and Dodge City. Then turn around and find the crustiest ol’ waddy who has ever chased cows for many a year. Ask that grizzled veteran of the plains when and who held the first cattle drive. He will agree with the dude, citing chapter and verse of this widely known but never disputed American myth."

"The only trouble is they would both be wrong! Cowboys came from Ireland."

@Meanderer , I truly enjoyed this bit of history I never knew about! You'd think I'd never been to school. I guess we just missed this part of New England history.

Now I know where the words buccaneer and jerky came from.

I wonder why John Pynchon's notes about his first cattle drive were never deciphered from his own shorthand. Some one should do it!

Thanks for this M, it was really fascinating. 🌹

Did people in the Wild West wear socks?

"Socks or stockings as they were more commonly referred to were widely worn to keep the feet warm and boots from rubbing the feet. They were made of of wool or cotton and looked very much like the socks we wear today although there was no elastic to keep them in place, boots did this instead."
