Prolia/ Evenity for osteopenia/osteoporosis

Has anyone on here had 6 monthly prolia injections for oseoarthritis or osteoporosis, and have you had any side effects?

I had my first one last September and was due for next one this Feburary after havinghad a DEXA scan former dr said to have Prolia injection to help my bones, the dr never told me about side effects and that I should have dental check before having injection.
Since having the injection the side effects I have had are worsening hip groin and knee pain, have to use a cane to walk now and cant walk very far.
Loose teeth.
Loosing my hair
Ear infection.
Tiredness.
Itching skin.
I wish I had known about side effects as I would not have had injection in the first place.
I have a new dr now who said not to have any more, and just to be very careful what I do and not to fall, he also said Fosamax had bad side effects as well.
I have heard that Dentists and surgeons are reluctant to treat people who have had Prolia because of Osteonecrosis of the jaw.
It is also given to Cancer Patients
There are several Law suits Against Amgen who make Prolia and Evenity.
There is also a Black box warning for it now as well.

I have not had the injections, but I do take generic Fosamax which is Alendronate for
treatment of my Osteoporosis. I take a low dose of 30 mgs. I refused a higher dose.
My vote is out on whether or not it increases bone density and to reduce the risk of
fracture. Weighing pros and cons, I am unsure if I will continue on the med. Have
been on it since 2019 for two years, then off for two years, now on again. I eventually
need a R hip replacement and yes, I also experience the hip groin pains and also knee.
This med for me has made no difference in my DEXA Scan readings. They remain the
same year to year, only showing that my Osteoporosis is no longer mild, but that it
is moderate to advanced at this time.

I am glad you shared this @ Nan...

I've been getting the 6-monthly Prolio shots for several years now but haven't noticed any side effects at all (and I usually have side effects from everything). I'm sorry you're having problems with it, though.

And I do appreciate the info; I'm going to ask my PCP about it, thanks.

I've heard that a natural treatment to prevent against bone loss is black tea (like Earl Grey, Engl. Breakfast, etc.). I wish I could drink tea but I'm allergic to the acid, sigh.

Thank you Ladyemeraude and officerripley for your input,i'm happy to see you have not had any bad reactions to prolia officerripley.I would be interested to see what your Doc says about it though
I think the worst part for me is the fact that you can't come off it and that doing so you will have spinal or hip fractures within months of stopping prolia, even though the same can happen being on it. I am willing to take that risk, and try anything else natural to help my bones i already take Green Lipped Mussel which has helped with the pain, and naturally contains chondroiton,I like Earl Grey tea.

Fossamax will help stop bone loss. It won't build bone. It should be a short term help.
Supplements and resistance exercise will help to build bone and should be the long term help.
I hear you. I take it but I will only take it for a year to help me get a start to a long term plan.

I never heard that about tea. Interesting. I'll look at that.

I heard that when they take you off Prolia, they put you on something called Reclast.

@ nan, interesting you mentioned the Glucosamine Chondroiton, years ago when I was in my beginning stages
of Osteoporosis/arthritis, I was taking a brand I felt benefited my needs, of course like so many treatment meds/
supplements there were a couple side effects. *I like this topic and thread..

also my dentist is not preferring his patients are on Fosomax and the Prolia and Evenity etc.
He feels it's detrimental to some degree, but he stays out of it and wishes us the best ..

A few years ago my PCP wanted to put me on Prolia, but I declined because I already take an injectable medication for my arthritis. Never was told about the side effects either.
I then took Boniva, and now they're saying it's no longer available. So, I'm just winging it for now.

I have a bone scan appt in the near future scheduled.

I hate needles, so I would not take injections for anything unless it is absolutely necessary. Exceptions were that my doctor talked me into getting the pneumonia vaccine, I got the COVID vaccine and have decided to get the shingles vaccine this month. And of course, I must have bloodwork done. I have been on Risendronate for osteopenia for several years. My last bone density test a few months ago, showed an improvement over the one two years before. That I have started exercising again may have helped.

A neighbor of mine came off Prolia after several years on it. She had to use another oral med for about a year to prevent losing the new bone she had added while on Prolia. Now she is off the oral medicine and she does a lot of weight bearing exercises like walking up and down the hills in her neighborhood, and using things like dumbbells. She also takes some supplements. Her hope is that she won’t have to go back on Prolia or any other drug. She hopes it will work. Also, she never mentioned bad side affects from the drug, but I also never asked her about side affects.

Folks, it’s really important to get your information from a medical professional you trust. Not some guy or gal on the internet. And that warning includes me and what I wrote above.

Thank you to all who responded to this thread, yes Brookswood you realy have to be careful what you read on the internet.
I am just thankful I now have a caring dr that I can trust to tell me the truth.

:) Careful of high-impact exercise, Diva, such as jogging!
I have never jogged a day in my life GL! 😅 I do power walk and use the treadmill, as well as other exercise equipment though. Nevertheless, thank you for the warning. I've heard and read that jogging really isn't any better for [you] than a brisk walk. In fact jogging can do damage to feet and knees, especially if not undertaken properly. I have had issues with both in the past and sometimes still do.
