A new medical device that helps to pin point veins for IV starts.

On Tuesday of this past week I was in Toronto General Hospital to have a new Cardiac implant device called a Watchman put into the left side of my heart. The Watchman is designed to sit in the left ventricle and trap blood clots, which helps to prevent strokes in people like me who have Atrial Fibrillation syndrome. This operation is about an hour long process, with a catheter being inserted into the left side Femoral vein, then threaded up the spine into the heart. I have had a lot of previous problems when nurses are trying to find a vein in my arm, to start a I.V. line. At one time in the past I had three different Nurses all trying to get a line into me, with no success.

I think the U.S. has been using a vein finder for sometime now. I remember responding to a call that a man was having a heart attack and if we are in the area or local police are closer, the police will also respond. If I recall the EMT used an infrared light to find the old man's vein in his lower leg. For some reason they couldn't take blood from the arm. I made the comment, "That's pretty cool." The EMT said the other truck carries the same tool only it uses a laser beam. This was back about 2005.

When I saw that Boston Scientific manufactures the Watchman Implant that didn't surprise me. They made the nerve stimulator implant that I was given to try for a week to see if it would ease my back pain, which it didn't. I had a nerve ablation instead and that did the trick, but the nerve endings will eventually grow back and I will have to have the ablation done again. What they do is burn off the nerve endings. I forget the fancy medical term they used.

My veins are hidden somewhere and getting blood out of me is a challenge for even the most experienced phlebotomist. The last time I had it done they used a vein finder light and voila! One poke and they hit a vein.
