Yesterday's day out to visit a Stately home and Gardens

That's it folks for the House Interior.. thank you for all the appreciation... I'll start a new thread later or tomorrow for the outside.. only a few photos , not as many as these *sigh of relief at the back of the room* lol... and only let down by the overcast & windy weather..but you'll get to see a little of the gardens...

The magnificent Kitchens from the 16th century....this is the entrance to the house for the visiting public...

This bedroom had one of the larger beds but in todays' style would be classed as a small double. Note the steps either side to climb into the bed which was not very high .. but back in the 15th century onwards .. people were very small, around 5 feet for men and shorter for women. Queen Victoria for example as late as even 120 years ago was only 4.9'' tall.. The upholstery is mainly pure silk... as are the carpets..
If in a room like that for more than about 30 seconds I'd have the screaming-meemies. So, so, so chaotic. I need calm spaces with lots of places to rest my eyes.

My teeth are itching from merely looking at photos of so much of everything. Sensory overload from all the furniture and paintings framed with ornate "pay attention to me" details, plus ornate tapestries. Stuff EVERYWHERE, even on the floors and ceilings. If I went to hell, it would look a lot like this.

I agree. That place looks like a house of horrors, not at all a comfortable place to be in. If I owned a place like that, I would sell all the paintings, gut the interior, knock out a few walls to put in a walking path (unless they're concrete which they probably are), and put in more comfortable furnishings. But it looks like a dungeon, and I'm not sure it's redeemable. Also there don't appear to be many windows.

To clarify, no offense meant by my comments. Part of being ADHD means my brain shifts to sensory overload in bright, noisy, and/or chaotic environments. For instance, shopping in Walmart or Target irritates me. Their layouts aren't intuitive, they're often very brightly lit, checkout lines are interminable, and music/announcements blare from loudspeakers.

I'm sure most of the pieces in the photos are lovely and extraordinary, but my brain sees that room as an aggregate not individual pieces, and the enormous sum of so, so , so many parts distresses my brain. I don't know how else to explain it, but am guessing others here whose brains are also (minor) neuro-atypical, can relate.

excuse me..no-one is asking either of you to live there.. no one is asking you to like it. This isn't a thread for people to criticise. I have never ever seen a photo thread on any forum in 20 years where people's photos are being criticised, I'm appalled. if you don't like the subject move on...don't look... I'm disgusted by this...
The rudeness is beyond belief...

I still cannot figure out what room they are talking about. Who would put a concrete walking path in a bedroom, or any room in a house for that matter? That's pretty nuts in my opinion. Since the rooms are very large already, why knock out a wall to make them larger?

The art may be very valuable, so I'd never sell it, unless I was looking at total poverty in the immediate future.

Show us some more, Holly.

exactly Lois.. what kind of mentality would take a Historic property of 600 years and put a path through it.. and replace the furnishing with ''more comfortable things''..than Pure Silk.. and Marino wool...and linen...:oops:

The ignorance is jaw dropping...

I wish I had more to post Lois... I really do, sorry that I don't...

Oh @Lewkat, I found a bigger and better picture of the Hell Stairs on the internet, not one of mine because it's quite diffcult to take a photos of them.. but someone managed it...fortunately

The door on the landing at the left of the picture is the door we came though from The Heaven room....

I have no clue what they're thinking was way back then about Hell and heaven and nothing is clear in the brochures about it either.. it does kinda take your breath away as you come out of the Heaven room which ... this one...

Thank you, hollydolly for sharing all of this.
One could visit for days....weeks...months...years maybe and still find something that one hadn't noticed before.
I envy you the experience.
thanks to you too for enjoying..(y) you're so right about finding something you hadn't seen before. My daughter visited 2 years ago, and there was lots at this visit she hadn't seen then..including whole rooms..

The beauty also of it that a family can buy an annual pass for a relatively small cost and visit as often as they like.. and even without the pass. the extended gardens which are well kept lawns with stream, are available for all visitors to picnic or walk their dogs for free, and people do...ll the time..

It's one of the most amazing Listed Mansions I've ever visited , and I've been to quite a few, and the staff including the staff in the restaurant.. are just suer nice... and helpful.. I wish you were able to come and visit... 🥰

Talk about ornate! But quite beautiful.
you're so right .. :) . whether it's everyone's cup of tea or not..I mean I wouldn't have that in my home even if I could afford it, all too ornate ..but the beauty is in the living history for me.. and for most people and not just the art but the beautiful oak.., the stunning silks... the astonishing tapestry

The fantastic Iron Cooking ranges and coppers in the huge stone floored kitchen... just the nearest any of us will get to going back in time 500 years...
