US marijuana laws : A historic shift, but it'll remain controlled substance

It's about time! :)

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

The proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use.

The agency's move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect.

Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. After the public comment period and a review by an administrative judge, the agency would eventually publish the final rule.

The proposal will be formally signed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, whose agency has ultimate oversight of the DEA, according to another person familiar with the process who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. Garland's signature throws the full weight of the Justice Department behind the move and appears to signal its importance to the Biden administration.

It comes after President Joe Biden called for a review of federal marijuana law in October 2022 and moved to pardon thousands of Americans convicted federally of simple possession of the drug. He has also called on governors and local leaders to take similar steps to erase marijuana convictions.

“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities,” Biden said in December. “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”

The election year announcement could help Biden, a Democrat, boost flagging support, particularly among younger voters.

Biden and a growing number of lawmakers from both major political parties have been pushing for the DEA decision as marijuana has become increasingly decriminalized and accepted, particularly by younger people. A Gallup poll last fall found 70% of adults support legalization, the highest level yet recorded by the polling firm and more than double the roughly 30% who backed it in 2000.

I read an article in the Guardian that said they might make it legal in Kansas in oh another year or so. I might reconsider CBD oil if it had a little THC in it. I'm afraid to get the edibles for fear I will eat them all in one sitting. 🤪
You gotta be careful as those things sneak up on you two hours later. Go slow and you'll know what's right for you.

Education is the key. People need to realize a lesser legal classification or label doesn't mean it's safe or non addictive. It's easy to get caught up on the civil liberty aspect and ignore physical consequences.

I'd probably die of shock at the price. I used to take THC in tab form and it was 50 cents a tab. No fear of rotten teeth from chewing gummies either.

I don’t think anyone cares anymore. I never did, unless you were high and had an accident or breaking MV laws, or being a pita.

I watched a reality show years ago about 2 cops who busted some people for possession of cannabis. They had a few ounces and a fresh tray of brownies. The cops decided to confiscate the cannabis and eat the brownies.
They got so high they called an ambulance. IMG_4270.gif

I was talking to one of the aides here about eating gumies at night before bed, and she said to go for it just don't tell anyone I've got them. She said half of the staff are getting stoned on their lunch break nobody would care, but I hate sneaking around. I'm in a legal state, but since cannabis is illegal federally that's the hang-up maybe with reclassification things will change.

Well done Rick. If it’s legal in your state, I wouldn’t worry about it. Police have more important things to do than bust old folks in nursing homes. My mil is getting prescribed cannabis for her pain tomorrow. She’s been against it for the 35 years I’ve known her. Thankfully her perception is changing.

Think he said it best and it sure has kept me on the 'straight and narrow'!
(Spoke anyone who live in one of those restrictive States, where it's still illegal...)

Did you ever watch the episode of Barney Miller when Wojo brought the hash brownies to work and the entire squad got stoned, old Fish was moving like a teenager.

I think there's more research now about the pros and cons. There are certainly some concerns about adverse health outcomes and overconsumption, particularly in adolescents.

I've heard that from several sources. Edibles, gummies etc have to get into the digestive track for for good absorption. Hence the delayed effect and ods with some thinking they are not taking enough because they aren't high yet.

-Some assume they'll get the same high just as fast with edibles and will be safer than smoking them.

I'm different, it only takes about fifteen minutes and I'm feeling the full effect.

Another cynical political move that will hurt the masses.
Yes. All those years when everyone thought it was harmless it remained illegal. Now that new studies are beginning to show that it increases the risk of schizophrenia, causes violent psychotic episodes in some people, and can cause lack of ambition and apathy in young people -- now they've decided to reclassify it as a less dangerous drug.

We still desperately need better health care, a solution for the homeless, an end to the wars we've been funding, a solution for the problems at the border, but marijuana is being legalized and everyone's cheering.

When I was younger I smoked to get high, as far out there as I could, and I drank until I puked, it's different now and I'm sure all the other older smokers feel the same one toke and I'm good for hours I don't feel the need to smoke like I once did. As for potent it's like Beer and Whisky a person may drink several beers or one whisky drink, or, you could be a fool and drink till you puke.

Just so you're okay, and others are enjoying themselves, I guess that's all that matters to most people.

These are good points that really shouldn't be ignored. It will take years before more supporting studies are released.

Yup. They are also finding the pot smokers can experience just as many if not more respiratory issues than cigarette smokers being more particulate matter in pot. And yet people seem to tolerate pot smokers more than cigarette smokers.

It is also disheartening that people seem to be worried about chemical intoxication/self indulgence than many other issues.

I first became aware of marijuana in 1966. The people who were smoking it tended to be artists, musicians, college students of the radical left and intellectuals. They thought of themselves as elite and very cool and I thought they were, too.

They would smoke and write music and discuss the world's big issues. Sometimes they would watch Reefer Madness and laugh, imagining the shock and pearl clutching of all the straight majority and feeling quite unique and superior.

Now 88% of the population thinks it should be legalized and probably use it at times. All of them still thinking they're cool and edgy.
