Unguent (noun) - a soothing or healing salve; ointment.

BenGay is an unguent used for temporary relief from muscle and joint pain associated with arthritis, bruises, simple backaches, overuse, sprains and strains.

The term unguent seems to be an old term, which had various meanings long ago, associated with anointing and other practices,
but I wonder what arenas are possibly using that term nowadays, rather than the commonly understood words for ointment, cream, etc.


I'd never seen the word unguent used, even when I worked in the medical field, or by anyone else, actually.

When I was a kid - late 30's - we always had a tube of "Unguentine" on hand for cuts and abrasions.

I Don't recall ever hearing it that way but remember Unguentine.

I heard my mother frequently using it in Spanish and pronouncing it as Unhuento.
Didn't know that it was used in English.
