He's always been scruffy looking but this looks like he's rising out of the flames of hell.
YESSS!! I was going to reply again with exactly what you wrote Colleen!!
And I agree with whoever mentioned those fingers. WTH is wrong with his hands? They look diseased. One has to wonder how the artist really feels about the king Lara, considering the nice portraits he's painted of others. I imagine he was hired because of the beauty of those paintings.
@palides2021 Very interesting pondering. Maybe they would see it as the B & W photo in reply #27 posted by @-Oy-.
@Lara I didn't notice everything you pointed out but I'll have to go back and look at it again at some point.

Jonathan's Yeo's portrait is, I think, a wonderful break from tradition, depicting a modern 21st Century King. I love it because the artist has done exactly what artists are suppose to do, which is to produce a work of art that is so incredibly different that it moves the viewer to have an opinion. It doesn't really matter if someone understands it or even whether they like it or not, what matters is the impact.

I think it is to Jonathan Yeo's credit that he obviously wanted to create a modern portrait, far removed from those of the past. He undoubtedly knew that it would create controversy and it has but, that is what great art should do.
This portrait is definitely created to inspire controversy, and it seems like this has been a trend lately.

The official portrait of President Obama is strange also, and looks like he is sitting on a chair in some kind of rosebush. (It actually reminds me of poison ivy with flowers)
Obama’s hands are strange as well, and you can see 4 fingers, plus what looks like a 5th one folded down, which had people asking why the artist painted Obama with 6 fingers on his hands when we all know he only has 5 like most people have.
Maybe it was some kind of symbolism, like the Monarch butterfly and the red that makes the king’s face look like it has blood on it ?

Yeah, I think some would prefer it if it more resembled The Simpsons. :D

Art isn't simply there to look pretty, it's there to make us think, feel, and wonder. I'd say this has been a huge success in that regard. Seems as though it's hard to ignore, which is great.

All I see are normal hands and some shading. Do people really believe he is shown with 6 fingers? I did a quick check, but all I saw was the usual Twitter nonsense of people getting worked up over nothing.

I swear, Social Media is hollowing us out from the inside. I came across a Tik Tok user the other day - her entire thing is that she eats in her car. That's it. Different foods every day. No commentary, just facial expressions. Has a lot of followers too - but then she is youngish (20's, I'd guess) and is very pretty.

Planet Earth 2024 doing it's thang.

He is the monarch. That's what I think the Monarch Butterfly signifies.
It does. Jonathan Yeo has been quoted as saying that it also symbolizes metamorphosis and rebirth. During the process of the commission, Charles went from a Prince to a King. It also reflects Charles' lifelong interest in the natural world, the Monarch Butterfly being an endangered species. The red military uniform Charles wears in the portrait reflects his role as Regimental Colonel in the Welsh Guards. :)

Yes, President Obama's hands do look strange. :)

Absolutely 💯

It's not meant to be the sort of thing you might have hanging in your own home or something you would see reproduced on tea towels or biscuit tins, it's a portrait of a modern King and will eventually be displayed in the majestic setting of Drapers' Hall for future generations to see and, I agree, it's great! :)

My thought about the photos is that's crazier than crap. Obama sitting in a bunch of Mints, Charles trying to have Darkish hair and Black eyes and no double chin. trying to look handsome when uglier than a Pit Bull. Call it Glug instead of Grog. Homely like ?

Obama's portrait looks like a product of AI to me, especially his fingers
Or a product of Andy Warhol. Or Romper Room:giggle:
Certainly not presidential looking but easier on the eyes than King Charles portrait

The portrait of Obama was painted in 2018 by an artist named Kehinde Wiley, and it was to be placed in the gallery where they put presidential paintings. It is NOT an AI painting, and you can look it up in Wikipedia, or other places online.
When it came out, it created quite a bit of controversy, but certainly not as much as this portrait of King Charles seems to be doing.
Personally, I prefer the old style of paintings , more traditional, even if they do not get as much public attention.

Looks like Buckingham Palace has moved the portrait of King Charles
to their indoor theater for your viewing pleasure. Ohh that red glare!!
:ROFLMAO:

Disclaimer: I found this on Bored Panda where it isn't related to King Charles' portrait.
