Seems like a long time ago

I promised myself that within one week after my retirement, I would get rid of my cellphones, beepers, computers and cable TV. Two years later, I had to confess that I lied, however, I was able to eliminate the beeper. Cable TV is next.

I also promised that I would also downsize my 5000 square foot house to half that size. I have also lied about that, but only because my girlfriend likes having a big house located on 4 and a half acres of land with 2 beautiful Arabians and a mule. I couldn’t get rid of the mule. We are too much alike, being a couple of jackasses, we kind of understand one another.

My girlfriend wants me to get another Arabian, a white one, but I told her it’s 2 Palominos or nothing. Palominos are beautiful animals that run fast, easy to train and understand commands. Arabians think they are in charge.

I can remember summer nights so hot in the days before home air conditioning that you’d essentially retreat outdoors after dinner until bedtime as it was marginally cooler there. I’d catch fireflies in a jar to watch their little dancing pulses of light, releasing them later. Mosquitoes would feast on me, but you wouldn’t know it until later when you had itchy bumps… 🦟

…and don’t bother complaining about the heat to mother…”It’s summer, it’s supposed to be hot!;” she’d tell me as she belted down another glass of beer… 🍺

It's still like that here in summertime.... very few people have AC in the UK...

The small town I grew up in was 7,700 above sea level in the Colorado mountains. In the 1950's our summer days were warm, in the 60's - 70's, with no humidity. The nights were in the 50's - 60's also with no humidity. We slept outside a lot and went camping frequently. But summer was short and when winter took over it was a bit different. Normal lows at night were below freezing and frequently below '0'! I do recall a few nights where it was -40 degrees.

In winter the daytime temperature was in the 40's but at times would drop down to 0 degrees or lower. As a kid I did not really notice the cold, although I knew how to dress for it. We went ice skating, sledding, skiing, and built snow forts for snowball fights all the time. Our Scout Troop took as winter camping a few times, that was fun. Great place for kids to grow up...
