We have new photos on camera SD card, but have trouble loading onto the desktop computer

We have a Windows 11 computer, and my husband has been loading the pictures onto the computer from my small pocket camera. The pictures of our new puppy were loaded by him.

Now for some reason, we're not getting the usual choices to see the pictures, select which ones we want to save to our computer and import them. We never had to use any special app, this always happened while inserting the SD card.

Anyone have this problem? Thanks for any advice.

I too lost the automatic display from just loading the card

I'm not computer literate
However, I have found (once the card is loaded into the computer) I can get them by clicking on the recycle bin, then selecting the SD Card option
Then opening the top few of the gargantuan list, and there they are. ready to be saved

Odd way of doing it, but it works for me

It sounds like something was installed that reassigned the image file extensions to some other (or no) application... maybe?

You really don't want external media opened on insertion, it's a potential security risk.

Open File Explorer and navigate to the SD card device and open it there.

Norton did have the common popup to scan for viruses, we clicked both yes and no. After that, we didn't get anything else on screen.

Do you know the format the camera saves the photos as? Some use their own format to maximize quality. Camera settings can change it to something more conventional.
Don't know, but we've been using this little Nikon Cool Pics camera for many years, with no problems on any of our computers when it comes to importing the pictures to my Picture folder.

I went to the Recycle Bin, and was surprised to see many of my pictures that are in the Pictures folder were in there. There were no pics dated in May or June of 2024. I didn't see the SD card option, but my vision is poor, will have to have my husband come here again and look at this. Thanks for your help Gary, I'm not computer literate either. I just figured it was working for years, and frustrating to see there's a problem now. :(

Talk about poor vision
with this advanced macular degeneration progressing at a rapid pace, I can hardly read the posts, let alone photos
Not sure how long I have to remain on SF

Glad I was of some help

(sorry about any typos)
Sorry to hear that Gary, I can relate. Have advanced dry macular degeneration/Geographic Atrophy. I always have to enlarge the print online, have to correct a lot of typos, and pages with a bright white background are the worst, I use the gray mode on this forum. I use a flashlight every day for reading, keyboard, looking at things in general. Take care my friend, hard to struggle with these things in our old age. Thanks for all your help over the years.

If your computer doesn't read the card, SeaBreeze, I used
to put it back into the camera, and connect it via USB to
the PC, that was a long time ago in the days of XP, but it
might still work!

Mike.

The native Photo app in Windows 11 is awful. Try downloading this free app which is way easier to work with - IrfanView. You may have to tell your PC IrfanView is now the default picture viewer. It's intuitive, easy to use, and a very common upgrade for Windows.

Download IrfanView
