Screens on Your Windows

Are screens on your windows necessary where you live? I’ve been in hot climates and there were no screens on upper levels in hotels. I watched a clip on Kimmel where they had a bird come in their kitchen. They live in LA, so I wondered if this is common.
 

We've always had screens, mostly to help keep bugs out like mosquitoes, flies, moths, wasps. We also have a lot of birds around our house and it is a possibility one would come inside and cause some excitement for me and my dog and cat. They have flown into our garage before, and a hummingbird flew into our camper once when the door was open, we do have screens on the camper windows. Since I don't like bugs, I love screens. 😉
 
Window screens are a standard thing on houses in Canada. I cannot ever remember living in a house or an apartment suite that didn't have screens on the windows. Our house has window screens and storm doors that have screens built into them, so you can open the screens on a hot day, to get a cross breeze. My Wife grew up in The Bahamas in the 1940's and all of their homes had window screens down there in the Tropics too. JImB.

Yes, it's ironic that you mentioned screens today, I just realized that the bathroom window's screen needs to be replaced, as some big fat fly got in just as soon as I slid the window open. :rolleyes:
 
When we were young we had a 2 story house that had 40 storm windows and screens that had to be changed with the seasons because we lived in Wisconsin. It would take my husband an entire day. He could only climb the ladder with one at a time.
 
It's time for us to replace some of our screens. The first floor will be replaced with stainless steel to stand up to the cat claws. I've noticed small holes in ours near the top half where birds have latched on.

Definitely I want birds & bugs kept out, but I also believe they help deter the squirrels & raccoons who come snooping around.
 
No , No screens we don't really have bugs here.The odd fly or wasp gets in... but really nothing else...

Birds don't fly in as long as the windows aren't open as wide as they can go.. we had that once in the 44 years I've lived here because we had both windows wide open in one bedroom.. and the opposite wall is all floor to ceiling glass.. and obviously it looked like open air to the bird.. but otherwise no..

We have more problems at night with moths and spders if we have a light on.. otherwise, keep the lights off or the windows closed at night.. no probs.

Saying all of that I do have a screen door of a type on my back door, not only to keep any flies out of the kitchen but also to stop birds, and cats from coming in... because I keep my Back door wide open all day long even when it's raining...

We did the same while we lived in Texas.
Here in Florida, we need screens on all windows.
When we came back to Florida I tried to get the solar screens on some of my windows, but to no avail.
Here, we don't really have that much time to be able to live without the air conditioning system on.
A lot of Floridians have screened porches as well. Some have screens put on their garage doors, which helps with ventilation.
A long time ago, I used to leave the garage door open during the day. One day, I heard repetitive knocking at the door going to the garage when I went to investigate, there was a huge turtle standing there. I picked her up and carried her across the street into the woods.
My neighbors had a few snakes making their way into their garage. I am always on alert when I open the door!😀

Oh, boy, do I ever remember those heavy wooden storm windows and screens that had to be switched out twice a year.

The first house my late husband and I bought had been built sometime in the early 1900's and every one of those frames had only one window they'd fit. So they had to be clearly marked as to location or you'd be going up and down those ladders to the second floor way too many times. We were too poor to get modern windows made.
