Ozark Music Festival July 1974 Prelude

In May 1974 I started working at the Walnut factory operating a table saw, I was sixteen but told the boss I had just turned eighteen. At the walnut factory, we made jewelry boxes, wooden valets, and other stuff made from Walnut wood, on my side the men worked turning the raw material into the parts that women would assemble into the finished products.

We knocked off at noon for lunch, and there was always a radio playing since the majority of us were young it was tuned to the popular rock station. Sometime in June, they started dropping hints about a very big summer concert that would blow away anything that had happened yet.

So some of our ears perked up we were saying what? who? when? where? we didn't have to ask why, it wasn't until next week they released details again at lunchtime. What a three-day RockFest comparable to Woodstock, where at the Missouri State Fairgrounds, when July 19,20,21 who these are a few of the headline acts.

That was enough to get the buzz started the news of this fest spread through the midwest like wildfire, The Woodstock of the Midwest Woodstock was a holy word signifying something that most of us had either been too young or too far away to get to, but this was just down the road four hours away tickets were only fifteen bucks. It became the hot topic around the lunch table, the foreman was getting nervous we had a large order to get out and half of his workforce was talking about going to a big damn concert. He declared loudly that anyone who went would be looking for a new job come the Monday after. A few of the older guys with families to support sobered up and got their priorities straight.

Me, hell I was 16 living at home, and it was only a job, a friend of mine had already got our tickets and would drive so I was set and ready. He lived in the Kansas City suburbs all I had to do was catch the greyhound out of Stinktown to KC and he would pick me up. So, that's how I got to the biggest event of my young life. Next month is the fiftieth anniversary I'll expand when the dates approach. Job Titles That No Longer Exist
