What is the longest train trip you have experienced?

I have taken the Indian Pacific from Perth to Melbourne 3 times.
A distance of 3400km one way.
The trip takes 54 hours, 3 nights
The longest train trip I ever took was 6 hours.. which included one change. Which was from the West of England to the west of Scotland... I remember very well because It was full of squaddies , and I was alone with an 18 month old, and luggage, and I had to stand in the aisle holding my heavy baby, ..no-one offered me a seat...

I know somebody who went on a month long train journey around India...

How very remiss of fellow passengers not to offer a seat.
Standing on long distance travel is not longer allowed?
Only the number of seats available what is sold?

December 1967 .. Vancouver to Toronto (3,000 miles). Three days, three nights.
I arrived wearing a fall coat, no boots. Had to get a winter wardrobe, immediately.

2006 or thereabouts, Australia .. Adelaide overnight to Melbourne - 10.5 hrs.
First time ever, taking a shower on a train. It was an experience :)

Late 1960's I forget exactly when.

Waldo Florida to Philadelphia PA about 900 miles.

Then a return trip about a week or so later.

Miserable trips in the cheap seats.

I was in college at U of F in Gainesville.

During one of the breaks I went with my girlfriend at the time to meet her parents. Married her right after graduation. Biggest mistake of my life.

1397 miles and just over 40 hrs. to go from Nebraska to California.
Best trip I've ever taken.

Mid-November and when we started into the Rocky Mountains it was snowing.
Went up to the observation car and the route was amazing.
The food in the dining car was worth the effort, looking out the window, listening to the rails.

The wife flew out to meet me at my parents and I talked her into both of us taking the train back.
A great time.

I took that route in 1984, but went all the way to Halifax. So I'm not sure what the total mileage was (and it was miles in those days, not kilometers). I really enjoyed it.

The longest train trip I did was only a few hours. The only reason I took it was due to being a maid of honour at my friends wedding. To be brutally honest, I hated it. It wasn’t crowded but many people tried talking to me and I really wasn’t feeling well. I was putting myself through school during the day and working nights. This trip put me over the edge and I got the sickest I’ve ever been in my entire life. I never get migraine headaches but I got one for three days.

What a lot of discourteous, indecent squaddies! (Whatever squaddies are (I haven't the foggiest).🤔😟

I took the train from Newark, N.J. to Tampa, Florida. It was about 24 hours and I really enjoyed it. I had a nice, very fun seatmate and we had a ball. We took a selfie and I swear, we could pass for sisters in that picture. She got on before me in New York and got off after me in Fort Lauderdale, FLA, for her cruise. We decided to keep in touch and have done so via Facebook.

that isn't very long. About 4. hours 5 at most.....

I used to work in Frankfurt.. and of course Paris is our near neighbour here...

If I go on the coach to Paris it takes about 13 hours... because of the ferry etc.. if I take the same coach to Scotland it takes 13 hours and there's no crossing of water involved..
Or the Channel Tunnel? No, no, no, no, no, if the French knew I was in the tunnel, they would likely flood it, then I'd have to quickly learn how to gargle salt water. 😊

I was stuck in a train heading for Miami Florida for 24 hours. The constant rattle of wheels on rails and sudden train movement made sleep impossible for me. To make matters worse, passengers in adjacent cubicles were smoking cigarettes like chimneys and it was all wafting into mine via the ventilation system.

I spent the entire 24 hour trip coughing since I am allergic to cigarette smoke, Ironically, I had assumed that the private cubicle that I was paying extra for, would protect me from smokers in the regular train passenger areas.

My longest trip on a train was in Panama in 68' when I was 18 and in the Army just prior to going to VN.

Myself and a local gal that I was seeing at the time took the aprox. one hour trip each way from one side of the canal to the other and spent the weekend three or four times while I was stationed there.

Back then the cars were open air and at times the jungle grew right up to the side of the tracks.

Do they still smoke on the trains in the USA?..it's banned on all public transport here...

I have always liked travelling on trains. I've done numerous trips to Melbourne on the day tripper, it takes at least 12 hours. When I book a ticket, I always go 1st class - don't want to sit with the riffraff., and it's always close to the Buffet car which serves refreshments. I've done trips to Adelaide, Brisbane and Broken Hill as well.

hollydolly: Smoking is also banned on trains here in Australia.
