What do you think is 99% hype?

Aside from politics, what do consider as being mostly underserved hype?
For me, an example would be John Wayne. In all his movies he's had only one role- to be a two fisted "John Wayne". Another would be Modern Art. There was a guy, who put a urinal on a post, and called it "art", and it SOLD.
What do you think is just underserved hype?

Prescription Drugs on all these "ask your doctor" TV ads. Listening to the "disclaimers" it becomes obvious that the potential side effects are worse that the illness they purport to treat. The only ones who benefit from these ads are the TV networks who reap billions of dollars from these adds....which are ultimately paid for by those who are roped into taking this stuff.

When I read this thread's title, the first word that came to mind was politics. Since that is a no-no, I will say the vast majority of advertising.

And on that subject, a personal pet peeve of mine are those beautiful pics on the outside of frozen meals. Has anyone ever found one where the contents match the picture?

Years ago I picked up a frozen dinner that looked like short ribs. I was in a hurry and didn't look at it closely. When I opened it up, I saw it was ground sausage shaped to look like ribs.

I was so disappointed.

That was over 20 years ago, so things may have gotten better. I am not sure why something so random stays in my mind years later.

In fairness, I have had some decent frozen foods. There is a line of frozen shrimp with coating that is pretty good. I think the name is Johnny's.

I'm always very happy that Prescription drug adverts are not allowed on British TV....

Now if we could only do something about the never-ending Funeral Adverts...

Designer clothing, sunglasses, etc.
Handbags...

I love handbags everybody knows that but £££'s of pounds worth of handbag is hype

I have never paid for a bag costing thousands of pounds, I wouldn't even pay £500.. for one.

My daughter paid over £1,000 for a handbag a few years ago... does she use it now ?... no, she sold them on after about a year or 2 because it was out of fashion..... she hardly even uses a handbag now..

if I paid £1000 for something I'd want it to last all my life..
